Maybe nurse anesthesia?

Published

I have wondered about becoming a nurse anesthesist (I don't even know how to spell it) Does anyone have advice on fields to work in for preparation? Is OR good or does it need to be more CCU type stuff? Also whats the difference in practice and education with a anesthesiologist?? Also is there any advice on schooling?

Specializes in Nephrology, Cardiology, ER, ICU.

Will move this to the pre-anesthesia (pre-CRNA) forum so that you get more answers.

*** The only nursing experience acceptable to most schools is critical care. SICU would be best but other types of critical may be acceptable to your school.

I suggest you visit the AANA site and click on the the "Becoming a CRNA" link.

Specializes in STICU.

Kix,

Check out the schools that you are interested in, and they will tell you EXACTLY what they want. You can find a list of the accredited programs here:

http://webapps.aana.com/AccreditedPrograms/accreditedprograms.asp?ucNavMenu_TSMenuTargetID=222&ucNavMenu_TSMenuTargetType=5&ucNavMenu_TSMenuID=6&ucNavMenu_TSMenuTargetID=223&ucNavMenu_TSMenuTargetType=5&ucNavMenu_TSMenuID=6

The program I applied to requires actual ICU experience, no OR, PACU, or ER experience counts. I didn't even consider CRNA when I graduated from school, but after working in STICU, I found it really fit my personality/work type. Find what you like, then focus on becoming an APN in that field. If you love L&D, become a midwife, etc. Good luck to you on whatever you choose! :twocents::twocents:

Most schools that I have looked into want adult ICU not OR experience. Nurse in the OR don't really have the same monitoring/assess opportunities as adult ICU nurses.

Specializes in SRNA class of 2010.
