So I feel like I havent had that much of my "life" taken from me yet...is it just cause its the first semester of fundamentals and its going to get much harder or am I not puting in enough time (I passed our first exam with a B)...I work about 25 hours a week and I study about the same or actually a little less. Can others give me some feed back? I just feel like in orientation the instructors grilled us about saying goodbye to everything...but I dont have kids but I do pay bills/rent and have a fiance to come home to and I still see my friends and have time to sleep in or get some coffee. Yet i am so scared of what is to come if it is coming........

Thanks everyone.

How are you doing so far? Are you understanding the material? Are you passing your classes? If you are, don't worry yet. Take each day for the experiences you get. There probably will be times when you may have to put more hours into it, but why go looking for trouble?

I know how you feel and have wondered the same thing about myself. I am in fundamentals as well, and actually have heard that this is the hardest course. Anyway, I have not found my life has gotten stolen, but I also am not working like I used to, and I study before tests... I guess I retain the information very well, because I'm getting A's and B's easily... while a classmate swears she studies her butt off, and she hasn't passed a thing yet.

I guess it varies widely!

Some people just take to nursing school better than others. There were some students in my undergrad program who studied their tails off, and made ok grades, while others simply were able to recall the knowledge quickly. Some things just make sense to some people, and others don't. Just don't fall into the trap of thinking it will always be this easy - it may get harder for you later, but then again it may not. Good luck!

I have found that my life is crazy, but it hasnt been taken from me. I study quite a bit, I work some, but when I want a night for myself I take it. I have learned that " all work and no play makes a really scary student." I believe at least it has been my experience that it does get hard, but if you prioritize your time which it seems like you are then time for you is time that will be well spent because you know what needed to get done got done!!!

well, I wont say that your life will be stolen but I can tell you it wont get easier, it only gets harder. I havent found any part of nursing school to be "hard" (im half way through now yay!) but once the ball starts rolling its just a lot of work and takes a lot of time and effort, that in itself is the exhausting part to me. My program is accelerated so we move really fast..maybe other programs dont? I guess the stressful thing for me is that I know that I have to put alot of effort in bc I need to know this stuff not only for the exam but for the NCLEX and for my job! The more you learn the more you realize that you don't know and that is stressful too...all the knowledge keeps piling in and there are days when you think your brain is going to explode! LOL its all worth it though!:)

Haha, I have started doing all that stuff. Still don't find myself spending much time... BUT we'll see I'm sure it will get tougher.

I have also started doing med cards, care plans ....I have just been using all the resources given to me... a lot of students dont even look at the cd roms attached to their books and there is such great info...like the abrahams drug therapy book give you a cd that has the top 100 most prescribed drugs and breaks down everything for you from their action to dosage its great and in words you can understand....I wasnt trying to say that I dont studying or that I didnt think that nursing school is hard because it isnt easy I was asking if people still found time for themselves because I feel as I still do...maybe I wont next semester or maybe I wont next week but for now I do.....take care and good luck!

Yeah I thought that way too about my first semester. Just wait. It's coming!!!!! To get you!!!!! :angryfire It will start to pick up from the second semester. Now you are just working on skills. Next comes the research and the CARE PLANS:angryfire

You hear alot of horror stories about nursing school. School is different for differnent people though. For me, I didn't feel it took my life away or anything. I had to study but I didn't stress over it. I got all A's and B's (mostly A's) in the program. I was one of the lucky ones I guess- I still had a life, worked, played college sports, had a boyfriend, (no kids though), etc.

You may be one of those people that school just comes together for. As long as you are getting good grades and are happy with your performance that is all that matters- do not compare yourself to others. That said- it does get busier when you start doing clinicals/care plans/pharmacology/ pathology, etc but it does not mean that your life is over.

For me, it seems like the program waxes and wanes. Some of my quarters have been no sweat, but there were some where I thought I was going to lose my mind. This seems to hold true for when we are in quarters, there will be a week or two every quarter when a lot of stuff comes due, then weeks at a time with nothing to do. I have straight A's (so far knock on wood) in nursing school and I owe part of that to really learning my anatomy and physiology.
