Math

I believe I once stated that I am not a math person, but someone told me nursing wasn't all that math orientated... I went through the directory of the college I want to go to and the only Math Class I seen for nursing was college algebra.

So here are my questions: What is College Algebra the equivilent to compared to highschool courses? Alebra 1, Algebra 2, a mix of both plus more complicated stuff? I never took any Advanced math (no trig)... So what exactly are you learning about math in nursing school? Proportions? Conversions? Measurements? None of these things seem difficult to me as long as the Math don't get too in depth. What are the hardest math problems that come along?

College Algebra is typically above algebra 1 and 2 for high school. The usual sequence would be:

1. Alg 1 (high school)

2. Alg 2 (high school)

3. Geometry (high school)

4. College Algebra

5. Trigonometry

6. Calculus

Some colleges offer a trimmed down version of college algebra if you do not plan on taking more advanced math classes. If this is so, they will sustitute pre-calc 1 and 2 for college aglebra and trigonometry. If you have not had 2 years of high school algebra, you will not be ready for a typical college algebra class.

It will all depend on the area where you work, but you will need to know the basics, just the same.

Example, for the intensive care units: You have a drug that comes 50 mg/ml.

Your patient weighs 132 pounds. You need to give 3 mcg/kg/min. Sure you can program the pump, but you still need to be able to verify the calculations.

This is just a simple example that I deal with on a daily basis..............

I took Algebra 1 in high school....25, nope it's been 30 years ago. I scored too low on the college placement test last year to take College Algebra. I had to start with Beginning Algebra. Once I got into the class, I was glad I did. There's no way I could have passed a College Algebra class.

I just finished this week with a score of 100 in the class and aced the exit exam. I had an excellent professor that would just keep showing it to you in a different way until you found one you understood.

I looked at the math links. They're really good. I could have saved my professor a lot of frustration if I'd know about them before now.

When I took the general assessment test at my college I barely missed the mark for not having to take introductory algebra. (Not bad considering I've been out of school for several years) I took the introductory class last semester and aced it.

Just because you aren't a math person doesn't mean that you can't do well in mathematics. If you are struggling in the class check to see if your college has a tutoring center, or a list of tutors. Don't be ashamed to ask for help if you need it. Sometimes it only takes a different approach for the information to sink in.

I'm working on my pre-req's for ADN now and I am just finishing up my intermediate algebra class, which wasn't required. Oh yeah, I am the polynomial diva. :lol2:

College Algebra isn't so bad. And, there is a lot of tutoring available out there. If you find yourself confused, be sure to take advantage of it.

I have to say one of the reasons I decided to apply to my local CC's nursing program was that there isn't a math requirement! There isn't any chemistry, either. I was pleasantly surprised. I know that knowledge of fractions (add, subtract, multiply, divide, and convert to decimals) is necessary, as well as all kinds of division and you have to know Roman numerals too. I will be studying basic math again before I take the HESI!

so then basically i should be ok then since I took a college algebra class. I could've taken a pharmaceutical math but they said that if i wanted to go for my BSN i should take the college algebra. I got a B in the class though, so I should do ok?? I also scored an 87% on the NET tests for the math section
