MATC petition process for Jan 09 students

Published

Is anyone waiting to be notified of acceptance into MATC's January 2009 clinical?

I'm waiting and after ALL the pre req's, CNA certification, NLN exam, Health records, and waiting, god I better get in!:banghead:

You have REALLY good grades. Go to a real school!

Whats really interesting is, I went to one of the information sessions about the petition process and one of the female speakers said to everyone in the auditorium, if you're ready to petition and are finished with everything, you will get in the program.

Oh yeah, my nurisng counselor also said, 140 students petitioned and they were accepting 70 and they left open 10 spots for LPN's who wanted to get in. She said only 2 LPN's petitioned.

I know it doesn't sound like it, but i'm actually over being angry and dissapointed about this whole MATC thing. Maybe its for the best, I think I need to go to a school that I respect and where I'm proud to be a student.

So all your science classes transferred? Thats great!

I'm going to their nursing seminar in mid Nov to get more info. They told me to bring my transcripts and they can tell me what I need to take and what will transfer in.

Good luck at stritch!

Maybe I'll see you in the Spring. :mnnnrsngrk:

Everyone with whom I have spoken who was accepted, was on the waiting list before they started using the petitioning process.

When did you complete your prerequisites?

I'll be going to that informational session too, along with another soon-to-be former MATC student. (She's currently taking her prerequisites, but is so disgusted with all of this that she doesn't want to continue there.)

Glad to hear Stritch has a better reputation. I've been trying to look online regarding the quality of local ADN programs. I've had a hard time finding much.

Hopefully we can find somewhere that appreciates hard work.

Go to the info session at Stritch. On the school's website it has a list of upcoming Nursing program info sessions.

If you're willing to spend the money to attend Stritch, why not think about UWM, Alverno or Marquette?

One of the reasons I wanted to do a 2 year program is because I'm a little older than the average college student and thought I wouldn't fit in at a school like Carroll or UWM. But after talking to the Nursing counselors at both schools, they said its a very diverse program with students from 18 to 60.

I know it doesn't sound like it, but i'm actually over being angry and dissapointed about this whole MATC thing. Maybe its for the best, I think I need to go to a school that I respect and where I'm proud to be a student.

I'm beginning to feel the same way.

I'm not going to UWM or Alverno or others because I want to do a two-year program so I can get my ADN and start working as a nurse. I'm almost 30 and want to begin my career as soon as possible. From there, I'd eventually pursue a BSN once I was working.

I'm definitely leaning towards Cardinal Stritch and am trying to get as much info on them as possible.

I agree MATC petition process is just horrible. I am currently there finishing up a couple of pre reqs for the nursing program, and I to have heard a couple of different stories about the petition process. I just want to get into school and get it done. NO one has time to petition, then wait around every semester and pray that your accepted. So I am also looking into going to Cardinal Stritch. I will be applying for the Fall 09 semester, crossing my fingers that I get in. Just want to complete anatomy & physiology 1, micro, and psych for life-span human development so that the work load would not be to much in the beginning.

Good luck to all who have suffered at MATC.

being a current student in the rn program at matc....i'm telling you now, it only gets worse once you are in the program! the program is so disorganized, yet they want to blame it's recent failure on the students. it's so sad and damn irritating. i would definately consider other schools and speak to those students. ****, maybe it's the same at every school. it is a very difficult program. i have a master's degree from uwm (in a different subject-obviously) but this associates degree is kickin my butt! also, unfortunately most of the instructors are not supportive. the counselors are useless and no matter who you talk to, you can never be sure you are getting correct, current and up to date info on any program questions you may have. oh, and my second semester clinicals were a joke. didn't learn anything...and i had to pay for that useless waste of time.

Sorry to hear about all the trouble you have went through. Good thing is your almost done!!! I think the school in general is very unorganized. I am actually finishing up the Medical Assistant program there, and my clinicals were suppose to start at the end of October. But ofcourse the instructor was not able to place half of us because she said it was a bad semester. So in the end I had to call around and find my own place to start clinicals, but I paid all that money for me to do the job myself, and start 2 weeks late.

What a joke! I just pray that I get into Cardinal Stritch so I can be done with MATC for good.:banghead:

yeah, it’s great for finishing a&p’s and micro. it certainly is cheaper.

honestly, that’s the only reason i wanted to go to matc’s rn program, because it’s cheap.

but, i guess that’s what you get is a cheap education.

i’ve moved on now and was accepted into carroll universities program starting in january.

it will take me 3-years because i have all the electives and science classes done. i’ll be spending a lot more money but i’ll have a bsn and from what i hear, a really good education.

i’m hoping i will come across some scholarships along the way.

you should consider bachelors.

i went to cardinal stritch’s open house a while back and it seems like a good program but really expensive for an associate’s degree.

hey, if you need any help with pre-req’s let me know. j

i took lifespan psych online and found it to be frustrating but i loved that i didn’t have to sit in a class room.

good luck!

oh wow! i’m sorry.

i know what you mean about the lack of support from the counselors. i completely gave up on them awhile back.

the last time i went up there was in november to see if i could talk to someone higher up in the department because i kept getting different answers from everyone about how they determined eligibility into the program after petitioning. so finally, i got a chance to talk to one of the head yahoo’s and she was no better, even worse. she told me it was a lottery and not to give up and to keep taking classes and to keep re petitioning until i got it. i said, keep taking classes?? i’m done with all the classes i need to petition and many more from a previous degree. she said it will look good if you keep taking classes and better your chances. i was so furious; i told her you said it was a lottery system so why would my chances be any better?? and why would i keep giving my money to this school for classes i don’t need?? that makes no sense.

oh yeah, then she said, you probably should work for a while as a cna and make sure you want to be a nurse, you may change your mind.

i couldn’t do anything but laugh. i said really, i’m 38 years old, have a ba and worked on and off in my life as a cna and obviously you she knows that because i can’t petition unless i’ve been through a cna certification program but i should just go work as a cna???

so, i’m done with matc.

it’s offensive they way they talk to students.

recently, i was accepted into carroll universities bsn program starting in january. i’m so excited!

it should only take me 3 years because i have all my sciences and electives done. just a lot more money but that’s ok, i’ll handle it.

at least you’re almost finished at matc and you can start working!

when it’s all said and done, we’ll both be nurses. j

Thanks Craig, I really appreciate all the advice your giving me. I hope life span psych won't stress me out to much. Your right I guess MATC is exactly what you get for a cheap education. I really was not trying to pursue a bachelors degree right away. I was hoping to go the associate degree way then land a job that will pay for me to continue. Plus a straight four years just seems like a long time, maybe I should just get it done and over with. Another thing is I do hear that Cardinal Stritch is very expensive for an associate degree, so I would be better off getting my bachelors right away in terms of money. But if I do decide to get my bachelors right away, I would probably have to take another semester at MATC to complete A&P2, Economics, and maybe Biochem. Cardinal Stritch does not have bio for one of there classes, instead they have microbio, which is what I am taking in the spring. I guess I really need to think about the whole bachelor degree thing right away.

Im not sure what is wrong with Matc (milwaukee) . I took several pre-reqs there and at madison matc and there is definately a different in the level of organization. I got into a bachelor program, but Matc milwaukee was very concerning to me with the pass rate and the lack of professionalism of the department. The pre-req teachers were being blamed by the nursing instructors for the poor pass rates.... that doesn't even make sense. How disappointing though that the way a previous poster explained it,..............it can almost hurt you to have an exceptional GPA.
