Master's degree online in Philippine-based College/University

I am an Emergency Nurse in the UK working full time (originally trained from the Philippines). I think online learning will be the best option for me to earn master's degree without attending classroom sessions. Any idea which college/university in the Philippines offers online master's programme? Any idea about tuition fee? Any advice/ information will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

My co-worker is taking her masters at PWU - Philippine Women's University. Fees are reasonable, around 10k - 13k per semester. In addition, you also have to take your major exams personally at their classrooms. So that would be a problem for you, being based in UK, unless you're willing to spend.

I'm also looking for an online based graduate program but it seems UP and PWU were the only one offering this.

i suggest UP.. a friend of mine took her MA @ UP via online... please inquire thru their website..

Depends on what you want to do with the Master's Degree. If you want to be a teacher then I'd strongly suggest UP.

The UP approach to theory and concept is ideal for a teaching nurse.

However if you are looking for administrative or other positions then it may actually be better to get your Masters there in the UK.

hi! im just wondering if the masters degree that we will take or we already have in the Philippines will be acknowledge internationally? I mean, like in the US, our bachelors degree in Nursing in the US is not equal to their Bachelors degree in Nursing. does having a MAN in the Philippines will also take advantage outside our country? thanks! im planning to take it as well and i want to know if i can also use it outside the Philippines. thanks!

For I know the MAN / MSN taken in the Philippines are not credited to be the same in the US. Our BSN program is just accredited because we undergo CGFNS-CES. CGFNS certifies that the subjects taken during BSN were the same as the subjects in the US standard.

MSN/MAN are recognized in the USA, you need to get the school to prepare a detailed TOR for your records once you graduate, the evaluation can be done by anyone in the USA to fully accredit it.

Most staff positions or Nurse Educator positions requiring the MSN or MAN will evaluate the TOR and find it acceptable by US standards. Most of the MSN/MAN programs are designed with the US in mind; unlike other countries.

A degree is a degree, once you get the Master's degree that adds to your credentials. The question then is will the degree in the Philippines elevate your professional portfolio in the US to the point that you become qualified for positions that require a Master's degree? I don't know the exact answer to that. I know that for advanced practice nursing (APN) positions, you need to have graduated from an institution that is accredited by NLNAC or CCNE (or any other accrediting bodies based in the US for specific APN roles) to receive eligibility for certification as an APN. Many universities and colleges in the US require clinical instructors and lecturers to have a Master's degree in Nursing at the minimum. No mention of where the degree is obtained in many cases. However, without US hands-on nursing experience, I would suppose it would not be a strong case for a US educational institution to hire a foreign nurse in a faculty role if "US hands-on experience" qualification is not met.

When I studied for my Master's degree here, there were foreign students pursuing a PhD in Nursing in the university I attended (some from Thailand, Japan, Jordan, etc) who had Master's degrees from their home countries. They were working as research assistants and teaching assistants in the same university. However, they all went back to their home countries when they graduated from their PhD's. So sorta, kinda, maybe it will be recognized but for what gain, I am not sure if there is any in your situation. For all I know, you could find yourself working as a staff nurse with a foreign Master's degree under your belt. That is not a bad deal at all, but remember, it only takes an Associate's degree as the minimum educational qualification to work as a staff RN in the US.

The instructor positions I have seen locally all require a degree from an accredited US University, it maybe different is other parts of the country but in the Northeast it is a must. Some Universities outside the USA are accredited by NLNAC.

Good point, whenever one is seeking a Master's degree from a foreign university with plans of applying it to an occupation in the USA then it is imperative to make sure that the university you plan to attend is recognized and accredited in the USA.

Some in the Philippines are, I'm working on a publishable list as part of our ongoing research here.

Could you elaborate on this matter more and how you are going to come up with this list? Accreditation of nursing programs in the USA is done by two organizations namely, NLNAC and CCNE. While, NLNAC does have accredited international programs in nursing, there is no institution in the Philippines currently included in their accredited program list. The only ones listed in their website are programs in Scotland, and a few others in US Territories such as Guam, Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. CCNE only accredits programs in Hawaii and the continental US. This is per the last time I checked since the web link is down at the time of this writing.

"Recognized" is a relative term subject to varying interpretations. Would a MAN degree in Adult Health from the University of the Philippines - Manila be recognized in the US? Maybe if the nurse comes to the US from the Philippines after having worked for a number of years in wound and ostomal care at St. Luke's, graduated from a MAN in Adult Health from UP, then, I would say this nurse is an expert and maybe the USCIS and a US hospital will recognize this individual's credentials enough to be granted a H1B Visa to be hired in a Wound Care Specialist role. However, a new grad RN from the Philippines with not a single day of paid nursing experience but has graduated from a MAN program from the UP will probably not get much farther than get hired as a staff nurse in an entry level role. But that doesn't change the fact that this latter nurse has a MAN degree, it only makes it so that this is an inexperienced nurse with a master's degree.
