Has anyone else heard this? I was talking to a staff member in our staff development office who told me that most Boston hospitals aren't hiring new grads right now due to budget cuts and overstaffing...she said that most new grads are looking at community hospitals in the surrounding areas.

Was I misinformed?

Mass General and BMC have instituted a temporary hiring freeze. Although I am not sure why I have heard that both facilities are over budgeted. The Brigham and BI are still hiring, but are primarily looking for experienced nurses. BI is opening up a new floor and will be hiring new grads and experienced nurses but they probably already have many new grad applicants for the limited positions. With the many nursing schools in the area there is no shortage of nurses in this area (there is a shortage of experienced nurses).

I have heard similar rumors. I have even heard that our community hospital (Cape Cod Hosp.) is not hiring new grads anytime soon. They normally hire half of the nsg class!!! I don't know what the deal is, but its a little discouraging:banghead:

:banghead:I work at the Brigham as a PCA and still have had NO LUCK! Very frustrating... and even community hospitals seem full - I've tried many and do not hear back, instead receiving the "We have received your resume and due to the large number of applicants, we will not call everyone but will keep your application on file, yadda yadda".

:( Hoping for an opportunity to arise.

Even though it's not an ideal place to start you can look at acute rehabs. You can at least get a year under your belt and sometimes it's less stressful and you could build a better base. You'll get down the basics like time mgmt, safe medication administration, proper documentation, delegation, communicating with MD's etc. that's a last ditch effort besides a nursing home.

Good luck in your search.

Wont the Brigham hire you????? I know they have openings on 10ab. Are you a BSN or ASN graduate?

Hi Gerry - I have a BSN and was hoping that the new 10AB would be the perfect prospect. I guess b/c they are starting the floor in a few weeks, they were only taking Dec'07 grads so that staff would be ready to go at start time (or so I was told by the manager who is a good friend of my clinical instructor that recommended me for a position).

They are going to open another unit on 10 in September I was told. Good luck in your job search!!

Hi,

I teach and work in town at Tufts Medical Center (we performed a little surgery on our name and the cost of changing all those signs must be astronomical!) But I digress! We are hiring new grads for our over fill oncology unit. That's the good news. It's also the bad news- most of the staff working on this new unit are all new grads, and it can get a bit overwhelming. But if you really want to work in Boston and not a small community hospital...

Nursing can get so fickle- we go back and forth from glut to shortage. If a new nurse can just hang in there, the pendulum will swing back again. It's also regioonal- you could probably find a job without probs in Arizona...:angryfire

I'm a student nurse tech at Tufts-Medical (& a new BSN grad)...and I've interviewed there and haven't heard back yet. :( Starting to get nervous, as I've sent out tons of applications & heard all the rumors about the tough time getting a job as a new grad in the city.

My experience as a new grad last year... honestly you had to know someone to get that referral. One day i decided to take my car and drive from amherst,ma (where i went to school) and drive across the state and stop @ every hospital i applied to (that was visible tot he highway, and where i knew where it was), and walked in even if i didn't have an appointment or interview. I ended up getting an interview on the spot @ emerson hospital (30 minutes outside of boston) and i actually was offered to be hired from 108 applicants i was number 2. Now for the ones in town... i had no chance because even though i am a great worker Boston hospitals receive probably about 100+ resumes each week. I recently spoke with the HR @ my hospital (newton wellesley hospital 20 minutes outside of boston), and they said they didn't want to discourage anyone from applying but they only had 14 positions open and 24 INTERNAL applicants. It goes Internal applicants, Referrals, then External applicants @ most hospitals. It is very hard but you have to absolutly stand out if you apply to a boston hospital or know someone. Please contact me if you have any questions... I KNOW HOW IT IS TRUST ME!!!

My heart just sank reading that....Newton-Wellesley was my top choice...I hope they tell me soon whether the news is good or bad. This has been so disheartening.
