UMSON BSN FALL 2017

U.S.A. Maryland

Published

I know the app isn't up yet but I was wondering if anyone was planning to apply.

Our RN to BSN program is for nurses who are already RNs but are associate degree or diploma nurses and want a BSN. The fall 2017 application will go up once the spring 2017 BSN applicants are processed. That should be sometime in November. The deadline for applying for fall 2017 is February 1. RN to BSN applications are received on a rolling basis.

Has the rn - bsn program for spring 2017 been filled yet ? I'm asking since you said it was based on a rolling basis.

@Grey Lady (or anyone else with insight): can you speak to the differences between the Baltimore Campus versus Shady Grove campus? With regards to clinical sights, the facility itself, how life as a student would be different in general at each campus?

Right now I am leaning towards Shady Grove, but I am worried about less access and/or it being a haul to clinical sites, as well as less opportunities to sort of put myself out there and get involved, if that makes sense.

Right now I am leaning towards Shady Grove, but I am worried about less access and/or it being a haul to clinical sites, as well as less opportunities to sort of put myself out there and get involved, if that makes sense.

Shady Grove is a suburban, commuter campus in Rockville, MD which is host to programs offered by nine different University System of Maryland institutions. For example, UMB offers the PharmD and graduate Social Work programs in addition to the School of Nursing. UM College Park offers undergrad and MBA programs. Campus consists of three large buildings plus one under construction. Students take classes in any of the three buildings but we have our own labs and faculty offices in one building. Check out the Universities at Shady Grove website for a virtual tour. shadygrove,umd.edu.

Our students do their clinicals all over Montgomery County, DC and even in Baltimore. But our students also come from all over so many of them end up in clinicals very close to home. However, the possibility that you will have a long commute to one of more of your sites is quite real. Regardless of the inconvenience, our students will see multiple hospital environments and I think that's a bonus. Many Baltimore students will do all of their clinicals across the street at University of Maryland Medical Center but even some of them will have to drive to other sites.

Shady Grove accepts 64 new students every semester, Baltimore takes 106. The number of applicants for each campus tends to be proportionate to the number of seats so one campus is not significantly more competitive than the other. Shady Grove nursing students are very connected to each other as it is easy to get to know everyone in your class.

The Baltimore campus is urban, offers limited student housing and has a big city vibe. Classes are larger there and are held in one building. Conveniently, the student center is right next door and can be accessed directly from the nursing school building.

Opportunities to get involved on both campuses are available to nursing students and there are opportunities at state and national level organizations. Nurses for Global Health has an organization on both campuses.

When you apply, you will only be able to request one campus. I would suggest you try to visit both of them before applying.

I was initially planning to do the ASN then a ASN-MSN program but didn't get in to my top choice (again, insert largest eye roll ever) and am now looking at UMSON again. Cost and availability for work and school was the biggest draw back but now I'm reconsidering because I just want to get on with school already!

To anyone that has been through UMSONs program, I've been working in direct patient care for the past 4yrs and have been taking mostly online classes but in looking at the application they ask for academic over professional LORs. Do you think that'll be a big negative against me? I don't really know any of my professors and feel like it would be awkward asking them for one.

Can we talk about letters of recommendation for a minute?

My pre-nursing advisor recommended I get one science professor and one non-science professor from this semester or last semester to write mine.

Unfortunately, I have two science professors who I know will write me great recommendations, but the only non-science professor I've had in the last 2 semesters doesn't know me that well.

What route are you guys going?

Hey guys, I'm also applying to the fall. I got waitlisted both times for Fall 2016 and spring 2017. I did get in to two schools for spring but decided to defer to fall 2017 and try umson again. This is my first choice. The other school was expensive and hopefully, third times the charm. I will try to get clinical experience position before the deadline. Good luck to everyone.

@ Grey Lady,

About letters of recommendation, it's been a little half a year since I graduated and haven't kept in touch with my professors. Also, right now my supervisors know me better than my professors. Can we turn in professional recommendations instead of academic?

They really want academic references. If you look at the form for references you will see the checkboxes at the bottom which indicate what information they are looking for. Basically we want some evidence that you are capable of high quality academic work. You can certainly include one or more professional references for additional information but those are not substitutes for an academic reference. When you ask your professors for a reference, maybe you could tell them a little about yourself or send them some work you did for their class to help them remember you.

In any case, your application materials are reviewed very carefully to get an in depth picture of you. If your application is not strong, a glowing reference can really help. If your application is really strong, references do not matter quite as much but they do matter.

@Grey Lady

Than can we submit 2 academic recommendations as well as 2 professional recommendations. For surf, when you check your status there are only two slots for recommendations. Can we still submit more using professional references and the commitee will read them?

Hi i am just joining this site because i was pretty confused about certain things i was wondering how many classes can you have that are planned but you did not do it yet? and i am talking about UMSON prereq

Hi i am just joining this site because i was pretty confused about certain things i was wondering how many classes can you have that are planned but you did not do it yet? and i am talking about UMSON prereq

Per the instructions on the UMSON website, "prerequisite courses must be completed prior to enrollment in the University of Maryland School of Nursing."

From what I understand, this means that if you are applying for next fall, you may apply with pre-reqs in progress. For example, I will be taking statistics, lifespan development, and physiology this semester, so those classes will be in progress when I apply in February.

I am unsure whether this means you would be able to apply if you planned to take your final pre-reqs over the summer, for example, as those classes would not be in progress by the application deadline.

I would imagine that in both scenarios described above your application would be reviewed, but you would not be considered as strong an applicant as someone with all of their pre-reqs completed.

I believe that if you apply with pre-requisite classes still in progress, and you are accepted, you are given a "conditional admit" and you need to complete those classes with at least a B in order to maintain your acceptance.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong about any of this.

@Lulu Belle thank you i went on there site and went to the FAQs and i think they did say you can have classes in progress

like i know i wanted to apply for fall 2017 but i still have Nutrition to take and probably another humanities
