MBON to renew or not to renew

So I just graduated nursing school in May and got my license in June. Amazingly enough, my license is set to expire at the end of October 😑 (Thank you MBON). Anyway, I just found out that on top of all that, I have to redo my fingerprinting and background check that I just submitted for my initial application in May. I just moved to North Carolina for a job and am currently working on getting my license switched here since NC is compact. So should I let my MD license expire? It's listed as MD only now that I've moved. Would it be worth renewing? I'm really kind of unsure of what to do. I know I'll be staying in NC for at least 3 years since I had to sign a contract down here. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Maryland is also compact. It wouldn't matter if you let it expire because you could always work there with your (compact) NC license.

I know Maryland is compact. But I can only work on my NC license in MD for 30 days if I move back. Once my state of residency changes I have to apply for license by endorsement. Right now my MD license is MD only. So how much of a pain would it be to reapply to get my MD license back, if I let it expire?

I'm so confused. Where did you get your license by exam? If that is MD, then I would just renew it. NC is a compact state so it doesn't take much to get a license by endorsement from the state of NC. In regards to renewing, you can renew as inactive and it wouldn't cost as much.

That doesn't sound right anyway. I would contact MBON they should have at least gave you a year if you just passed your NCLEX.

It's because of my birth year. It's stupid that they're making me redo my background check and fingerprinting too. And as to getting my license in NC, it's been a bigger pain just because I had a compact license before.

I know and they gave me year. Everyone else got 2 years. I graduated in 2014 and had to renew in 2015.

No I have a full license. I passed the exam. My license is active. But since I was born in an odd year and took the exam 4 months before my birth month, they're making me renew since it doesn't fall within 90 days of the end of Oct. I passed my background check. The background check and fingerprinting is something new that they are starting with October and November.

If it is an odd year, and you were born in an odd year, and the 28th of your birth month is more than 90 days after your licensure date, you will be required to renew the same year you initially were licensed. Same thing applies if you are licensed in an even year and were born in an even year.

Makes complete sense, right? 😳

And yes, you are required to do a background check and fingerprinting all over again. And if you're lucky, they WONT lose these things before you get your application to them. This state is utterly ridiculous.

Thank goodness we aren't required to do CEUs. Could you imagine?

OP, free yourself from the absurdity. Don't renew Maryland, especially since you're no longer a Maryland resident or employee anyway, which is a requirement for MD licensure.

The requirements changed for those newly licensed in 2014 and with a birthday in October (even birth year).
