What is your take on the issue of legalizing marijuana?

:rotfl: You're too funny. I knew an alcoholic who would pass out and soil himself. Ick! I suppose what others are trying to say is that Weed is no different than alcohol and I would venture to say that anyone who gets that trashed on anything and soils themselves, really has no self respect anyway.

So as a medical person, why would you want to add to the misery by making something else that makes people high legal? Illegality is the last bastion that keeps alot of people from trying drugs. Take that away and I think we would have an epidemic. Plus I just think it is immoral. My personal opinion, obviously.

I really think the whole legalize pot lobby is not really for sick patients but so that potheads can smoke pot without getting in trouble.

And that's exactly the reason why i have a problem with it being legal (although i don't say potheads.) I cannot 100% believe that it's all for sick people. And i also think there would be an epidemic as well, if it were legal.

That's ok Marie - I was married to one so I can say pothead. Plus I have a few in my family. Stoners. Losers. Can't hold a job to save their life or the lives of their kids. (And I will be judgmental when they choose to ignore their kids. Hey, look at the thread where we think women and/or men should be sterilized if they are addicts and keep having kids.)

They just have that look about them, sort of always zoned out.

Try having a meanful conversation in a room full of stoned folks.

Are you speaking from personal experience? Have you personally known a family member or close friend with a terminal illness that has no appetite or cannot keep any food down unless they use a little marijuana to quell the nausea or stimulate their appetite? No need to make judgemental, general statements.

Really! I was a hospice nurse for 5 yrs. I had a wonderful elderly gentleman who had terrible nausea and no appetite. We tried everything. He asked me if I could get him medical marijuana. We discussed the desired effects and the legalities in my state, and Marinol. The gentleman's son ended up getting him a joint. The gentleman and his wife kept it a secret .

As a (medical person), I have witnessed a great many things. Making something illegal has never stopped an addictive personality from trying it. We already have an epidemic. Why is it immoral? It has been my experience in life that certain types of people will always be around to take something useful and abuse it. Sex btwn a married couple is a beautiful gift that has been abused, as you well know. Does that make sex immoral/ Should we make it illegal? Should the swat team bust down your door with the local news present because you were .... well you know?:imbar
Ah, not really. If i drink a Jack and Coke, you don't feel the effects when i'm the one drinking it. Someone else smoking weed, and if i'm in the same room with that person, there's the second hand smoke which i would be breathing in. There's definately a difference.

Ok maybe I'm not making my point clear. I have asthma and I do not want to be around anyone smoking cigarettes. We all know there are health effects to inhaling second hand smoke, but cigarettes are legal!! Marijuana and alcohol have the same effects, but alchohol is legal!! That is my point. Like I said in an earlier post, I have been around many people smoking it and never felt any effects. But honestly, I dont want to be around it anyways because of my asthma. Just like I dont want to be sitting around someone smoking a cigarette because of my asthma. When someone lights up a cigarette, I am feeling the effects, but no one is trying to make cigarettes illegal. Just like I dont think people should smoke cigarettes in public places, I dont think anyone should smoke marijuana in public places, but it is just like cigarettes and alcohol so why is it illegal???

Your point was clear, i just don't agree with it.

"marijuana has thousands of possible uses in medicine. marijuana (actually cannabis extract) was available as a medicine legally in this country until 1937, and was sold as a nerve tonic -- but mankind has been using cannabis medicines much longer than that. marijuana appears in almost every known book of medicine written by ancient scholars and wise men. it is usually ranked among the top medicines, called `panaceas', a word which means `cure-all'. the list of diseases which cannabis can be used for includes: multiple sclerosis, cancer treatment, aids (and aids treatment), glaucoma, depression, epilepsy, migraine headaches, asthma, pruritis, sclerodoma, severe pain, and dystonia. this list does not even consider the other medicines which can be made out of marijuana -- these are just some of the illnesses for which people smoke or eat whole marijuana today.

there are over 60 chemicals in marijuana which may have medical uses. it is relatively easy to extract these into food or beverage, or into some sort of lotion, using butter, fat, oil, or alcohol. one chemical, cannabinol, may be useful to help people who cannot sleep. another is taken from premature buds and is called cannabidiolic acid. it is a powerful disinfectant. marijuana dissolved in rubbing alcohol helps people with the skin disease herpes control their sores, and a salve like this was one of the earliest medical uses for cannabis. the leaves were once used in bandages and a relaxing non-psychoactive herbal tea can be made from small cannabis stems.

the most well known use of marijuana today is to control nausea and vomiting. one of the most important things when treating cancer with chemotherapy or when treating aids with azt or foscavir, being able to eat well, makes the difference between life or death. patients have found marijuana to be extremely effective in fighting nausea; in fact so many patients use it for this purpose even though it is illegal that they have formed `buyers clubs' to help them find a steady supply. in california, some city governments have decided to look the other way and allow these clubs to operate openly.

marijuana is also useful for fighting two other very serious and wide-spread disabilities. glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness, caused by uncontrollable eye pressure. marijuana can control the eye pressure and keep glaucoma from causing blindness. multiple sclerosis is a disease where the body's immune system attacks nerve cells. spasms and many other problems result from this. marijuana not only helps stop these spasms, but it may also keep multiple sclerosis from getting worse.

14) what's wrong with all the prescription drugs we have? they cost money and are hard to make. in many cases, they do not work as well, either. some prescription drugs which marijuana can replace have very bad, even downright dangerous, side-effects. cannabis medicines are cheap, safe, and easy to make.

many people think that the drug dronabinol should be used instead of marijuana. dronabinol is an exact imitation of one of the chemicals found in marijuana, and it may actually work on a lot of the above diseases, but there are some big problems with dronabinol, and most patients who have used both dronabinol and marijuana say that marijuana works better. the first problem with dronabinol is that it is even harder to get than marijuana. many doctors do not like to prescribe dronabinol, and many drug stores do not want to supply it, because a lot of paperwork has to be filed with the drug enforcement administration. secondly, dronabinol comes in pills which are virtually useless to anyone who is throwing up, and it is hard to take just the right amount of dronabinol since it cannot be smoked. finally, because dronabinol is only one of the many chemicals in cannabis, it just does not work for some diseases. many patients do not like the effects of dronabinol because it does not contain some of the more calming chemicals which are present in marijuana."

feel free to open your mind on your own. i support complete legalization because we can save our environment from so many other parts of the plant. people will smoke marijuana legal or not but why make it illegal when it has so many benefits.

for all the smoke/second hand smoke>>>>>>>>>

you can eat it, cook just about anything with it, drink it.

Addictive personalities WILL find ways to circumvent the law but to make it available to everyone else? Everyone else to whom that law making it illegal was the last line they would never cross? Then the line disappears and they get pulled into making selfish decisions?

I think it is immoral for us to make easily available another substance that is not good for you. We already have cigarettes and alcohol. Why add more?

I don't think your example works using sex. Sex starts out as a beautiful gift and then is subverted by Mediaography or prostitution or incest or sexual abuse. Pot does not start out beautiful. In my opinion. It starts out as a way to get high. There are better ways to get high in my opinion. Standing on the top of a snow covered mountain about to snowboard down is exhilarating - a high if you will. Watching a newborn baby come into the world is a high. Watching your 8 year old hit the baseball past the pitcher for the first time is a high. Hearing the good news that your 10 year old nephew is in remission from cancer is a high . . .oh and would you advocate children with cancer and nausea smoking pot. How about that 3 year old with glioblastoma? Hand her a joint and teach her to puff? If it is ok for an adult to get the anti-nausea effects of smoking pot, why not a 3 year old?

of course they don't like pills as much as smoking pot. they don't get high!!!

it is the high they want. if it was just the anti-nausea, they'd take the pill or get it in a suppository form.

I say legalize it for a lot of reasons. Or make alcohol illegal. Why isn't anyone scared that people walk around on anti depressants , psych meds to be "happy" cuz doctor prescribed the high ? I am not disregarding people who have a legit chemical imbalance , but it seems to me everyone and their sister is on prozac and the like , what's up america ? We supposedly live in the best country in the world , why is everyone so unhappy? Ok OK I'll shut up now ! lol

I still wouldn't call the effects of marijuana a health benefit.

And actually, yes, i have known terminally ill people (my best friend as a matter of fact) who used marijuana to ease his nausea, to help him eat. I agree with this kind of marijuana usage, and i agreed with it long before he ever got sick. I don't, however, agree with it being legal for recreational use.

And my statement was not judgemental or general, so do not label it as such, thank you.:)

All I'm saying is this is not a black and white issue.
