Maricopa going to open more programs?

Published

I got a survey on email today from Maricopa...sounded like they were gathering info so they could plan to open more Nursing programs. Anyone know about any plans for more programs??

I got the same email. It doesn't seem like they will do anything in the near future but I guess you never know!

I got the survey too. It sounded like they were more interested in how to improve the wait for prereqs, not the wait for the actual program. But it would be nice if they did.

I got the survey and think that amers is correct... it seemed more about the wait and ways to improve the process of getting in.

As a matter of fact, I heard last week on the 5:00 news, because of budget cuts, they were going to actually close some Maricopa RN programs... keep in mind it's the news.

are you serious?! closing programs? this just keeps getting better. i don't understand the reasoning, when you "do" have the demand as in the wait list, willingness to pay the tuition. do you think it is not the economy or possibly the particular programs they are targeting?

Keep in mind guys, the colleges make little to no money off of the nursing programs, even the private institutions. Equipment for skills labs are very expensive, and its difficult to attract and pull RN's from the field to teach. You have to have atleast a MSN to teach, and whats the average salary for a MSN nurse, $85k?? (Just guessing here...) The colleges don't pay that much! Also, there is no premium on Nursing School tuition over regular MCCCD tuition. I know that the private nursing schools make little profit on their programs too. Most schools get profit from books and supplies, not tuition! It makes perfect economical sense to close programs, especially those that have struggling NCLEX scores. Sorry......

So, do you really think it's true? Will they be closing some programs? I guess that will be a favorable things for schools like Ethel Bauer and Everest!

The budget cuts most likely won't occur until we are in a program... after all, this is the government we're talking about here... budget cuts will have to be made somewhere... funding is on short supply for all programs.

Massage nailed it on the reasoning. I couldn't have explained it better... and the economy will only make things worse. Most everyone has read a recent article somewhere about the healthcare industry and the economy. RN's are somewhat safe for now... therefore even more applicants will be coming down the road soon.

I also agree with sassie that the privates will pick up the slack and tuition will most likely go up... economics 101: the laws of supply and demand.

I agree with your reasoning for sure. For example, only a third of the tuition money obtained by ASU is used for the actual school. The state gets the rest to pay for things like the alternative fuels fiasco. :angryfire

I am hoping that the state will realize that there is a much bigger issue here. The lack of medical assistance to the community. Who will take care of the sick when all of the experienced RN's get burned out or retire? I wrote Napolitano (sp?) a letter and told her how I felt about cutting nursing programs. If you guys want to be heard, you have to voice your opinions. :twocents:

There is no lack of demand for healthcare. Just a lack of people with insurance who can pay for it. This is a mess that will take a long time to fix.

I would expect a contraction rather than expansion of programs. After all, many hospitals are now in hiring freeze modes. There is still a strong demand for RNs - experienced RNs.

I would feel extremely frustrated as an aspiring student. But as a working RN, less supply = more demand. A good thing...so I won't be writing a letter to the governor anytime soon!

hey guys! im currently in block one at mesa boswell and we are the first batch (including other block ones from maricopa) to experience the new curriculum.

anyway....my instructor told us that maricopa is trying to partner up with IIA to open up a nursing program because of the waiting list. I dont know when this will happen but they said it is very imminent so there ya go...theyre not closing any programs but opening up more.....so good luck to all!

when you say iia do you mean ethel bauer? i am inclined to agree that something is going on with ethel bauer, if you check the clinical rotation site, they have nothing under their name. wow, i wonder how that would look for their current students? i wonder if any of their students know of the possibility of this? thanks for the info.
