ched adds 1 year to 4 college courses
[color=gray]tuesday, january 27, 2009
starting school year 2009-2010 engineering, architecture, nursing, and accounting will be five-year college courses, the commission on higher education (ched) said on tuesday.
angeles, also the vice chairman of presidential task force on education (ptfe), said the move was part of the task force recommendation submitted to president gloria macapagal-arroyo last month.
"it was to formalize the prevailing situation wherein students taking the said courses have to complete it for almost five years," he said.
angeles cited nursing course as an example wherein the current curriculum requires enrollment for three summers for students to complete the course.
likewise, making the courses five years would also allow the country to conform to international agreements such as the bologna and washington accords that sets the standards for such courses.
earlier, presidential adviser for education dr. mona valisno said that making these courses five years would do more to improve the filipino graduates competitiveness vis-à-vis their counterparts in the international labor market.
"despite the competent and hardworking abilities of filipino professionals, many are not able to land good jobs or the jobs their degree requires because their credentials are based on a 10-year basic education program, which is not recognized globally," valisno said.
"the philippines is one of only two countries which require only 10 years of basic education. the other country is botswana. in other countries, basic education now lasts 12 years," he said.

so if this will happen, do nurses still need to do the bridging program for them to be RNs in the UK, Australia and NZ?Bachelor in Nursing course in australia and NZ can be done in just 3 years, and they dont have Board Exams to gain a registration...
in the Phils. it will be 5 years now and then newly graduated nurses should have to pass the Nurse Board Exams to become RNs.
so if this proposed 5 year BSN program will be implemented, will this be recognized abroad, without doing any extra course???
thanks.
The main purpose of the Australian Bridging Program is to prepare the foreign nurse to the Australian Nursing setting/standard so a 5 year BSN Philippine Nursing graduate would still need to undergo such bridging course.
The reason why Australian/New Zealand nursing curriculum can be done in just 3 years compared to other countries is because Australian/New Zealand Nursing students study ALL NURSING SUBJECTS right from first year to graduation. Nursing students in Australia are not forced to complete unnecessary subjects (who would like taking Filipino 101, Taxation 102, P.E 101, Rizal 100, etc. in a nursing course?) that usually consume two or more years in a 4/5-year Nursing curriculum in other countries. There are no board exams for Australian Nursing graduates but it is now a competitive course to get into (there is a minimum University Admission Index (UAI) for high school graduates to get accepted into the Nursing program).
i think this is unnecessary for most good schools, but they really need to do something about the schools that perform so badly. It's so wasteful for people to enroll in their nursing programs especially if they don't ever pass the board exams because of their poor training. CHED should keep those schools in close watch.
I hope they all took those PE classes and NSTP.. its such a waste.. and all those minor subject which has no used at all....
There's gonna be huge drop of higschool student in the country taking nursing in college... Those nursing school will surely drop there price and do marketing strategy to take the eyes of those people shinning like a blingbling...
I hope doctors go back to being doctors now...
"sorry, but i don't really understand what you're trying to say but if this is how new nursing graduates in the phillipines communicate and write, then i'm all for the extra one year in school..."
not to sound snobbish, but i have to agree. it's terribly off-putting to read posts written in text language and wrong grammar, with total disregard for punctuation marks and the use of capital letters when necessary. this is supposed to be a forum of professional people. colloquials should be used very sparingly, if at all. as mentioned in a previous post, if another academic year will be added despite overwhelming public opinion to the contrary, i think it should be focused in improving the english language skills of many of today's new graduates. its importance can't be overstated.........
The President threw this proposal out the window a few weeks ago but CHED is still pursuing this matter regardless. They said that they are reevaluating the situation and will have definite answer by March. So, this mandatory 5-yr Nursing degree is still on the works and is not 100% sure yet.
As far as I can remember, this is a house bill made by some "unknown" congress person (wanting to make a name in politics???).. When I first heard it on the radio, I was really laughing out loud. Especially when the radio announcer was "too" disappointed and disagreed "with all his heart" about the said issue.. ^_^
Four years is enough, at present. For now, CHEd (in collaboration with the government) should be deregulating the standards and curriculum of these Colleges and Universities.. This is really a No-No.. not just for me, but for hardworking and less fortunate (financially) students..
sorry, but i don't really understand what you're trying to say but if this is how new nursing graduates in the phillipines communicate and write, then i'm all for the extra one year in school...

the time to learn a foreign language is well prior to college, especially when the college is teaching in the foreign language. simply adding another year onto four will do little to improve any language skills, as long as you have instructors who cannot speak it themselves. perhaps a mandatory, non-accredited year long english lab for any incoming "would be student" with deficiencies, followed by an exit exam. but to just arbitrarily add another year (which is exactly what has been done) to what is globally done in four simply acknowledges the problem, but does nothing to address it. another year of dubious "preparations" will simply grab another 20-60k out of the pockets of the parents.
Your point is well taken, woknblues. As a matter of fact, I totally agree with you. If you'd care to read my other posts on this thread, I've taken the position of flatly disagreeing with this government move. That's why I said, "if (if being the operative term) another academic year will be added......... "
Sadly, the current state of affairs of nursing education in the country leaves anyone who loves the profession with a heavy heart, and it's all because of the hundreds of substandard schools that were allowed to join the nursing bandwagon. Having said that, I dare maintain that there are still the good schools that produce the kind of nurses that made our country a by-word in health care the world over. These schools deserve our support and utmost respect.
At some point, I believe this mess will correct itself. Unfortunately, not without hundreds of thousands of shattered hopes and dreams.
