So we were told yesterday that our unit staff snack "mimi-mart" (closet of snacks soda, cereals, etc) is going to be taken away because we are making a profit, operating a business without a license, and its contributing to a negative work environment.

WHAT THE HECK!!!! Lets sort this out. Making a profit....Soda can is 50cents and a candy bar is 75cents....added up the prices collectively for bulk items purchased at Costco...this is no way making a profit, if anything we need to cover additional expenses.

Secondly, operating a business without a license...GIMME A BREAK!

Third, contributing to a negative work environment....If management really wanted to face reality they would understand that BAREBONES SHORT STAFFING IS the reason for a negative work environment.

I am constantly amazed at how management turns a blind eye to the REAL issues in nursing - Short staffing, antiquated facilites/equipment, salary, benefits, customer service crap, and manditory overtime. Instead they make mountains out of mole hills.

A seasoned nurse of 22 years I work with basically said to ignore this crap. Its yet another pathetic attempt to control our every move.

Did you try "All proceeds will be donated to the hospital"?

I suggest that every nurse on your unit page your manager (or shift supervisor or administrator on-call) every time you are too short of time to take a proper meal break. Let them know that without the snack bar, you have no choice but to rely on them to run for your food.

This is, without a doubt, one of the most petty and trivial complaints against staff activities I have ever heard.

I totally agree with this. One would reasonably assume, with all the education and credentials possessed by management, that they would be able to clearly see the "big picture" and address the more pressing concerns on the units.

However, this seems like nothing more than a classic attempt by management to force employees to obey, conform, and submit to authority. This is a form of control.

:yeahthat:

Wouldn't it be nice if they could get themselves in an uproar about nurses that miss meals, breaks and trips to the bathroom. They always seem to be focused on the wrong things don't they.

I just thought of one more thing: While your boss is running for your food, be sure to have her sign your time sheet so that you are paid for your lost lunch break.

what do you do with the money ? Buy more snacks ? why don't each of you bring in your own snacks then they would probally let you keep them. At our facility we have a moderate size kitchen with a frig/ microwave/toaster/coffeepot and a wall full of cupboards to store foods. Also, another unit has a frig and cupboard in their conference room. Staff keep all kinds of foods/snacks. Plus we have vending machines for pop/ snacks. I think it is a bit tacky to sell snacks/ pop / etc.on you unit.

Ummm doesnt everybody do that??? One of my fellow nurses jokes that she always make sure to order extra diet pepsi before my shift...

I see nothing wrong with eating cereal/soup/jello or drinking juice or soda during my shift.

Now if only I could get the kitchen to send up Cheeseburgers and chicken salad---
