Malpractice Insurance- needed?

Hi AN,

As a new grad RN, should I purchase my own malpractice insurance? I know that technically I am covered by the hospital I work at, but I have been told not to rely on them and to have my own to cover my license. Thoughts? What insurance would you recommend?

Thank you in advance!

Simple answer is yes. The hospital policy only covers you while you are at work and during your time employed, plus they'll only cover you if you precisely follow every policy & procedure. There are few threads on this forum discussing the same including a recent thread in the general nursing forum. The $100 or so per year it costs is well worth piece of mind knowing that you will have someone on your side.

PP's is absolutely correct. Another advantage of having individual malpractice, is that it will usually cover the cost of your own personal legal advice/representation - a very wise thing to have if you are ever involved in any sort of legal action.
