Males as Nurses

Nurses Men

I am thinking about going back to school to get an ADN to become an RN.

I have a 4yr degree and work as well but hate it. The thing is, people think negatively about guys who want to be nurses.

How do you deal with that? Nursing seems to be one of the few careers where you shouldnt have a hard time to find a job but it is so populated by the majority of women that I am wondering as a male will people look down on you?

i've had many a patient tell me over the years that they much prefer female doctors and male nurses. the majority of the reasons why centered around their belief that female doctors take more time with them and listen better and male nurses dont come across like their mothers.

Dave11, very interesting. I've been a RN for 20 years. I remember when in my early days, I got the look a couple times. But, the perception of nursing as a field has changed for the public. I don't know if it is because the public has seen more medical shows/movies with male nurses, had more male nurses take care of them, or what. But, the perception has changed somewhat. I also agree, it may be where one lives that may have the most effect nowadays. Say, for example, living in a more progressive college town/city vs a very blue collar, traditional oriented one. Maybe, that may make some difference. You mention the South. There may be some differences compared to the North, but I don't know. If you are working on your MBA...I recommend you finish it while waiting to get into nursing school. You will also look more attractive with the MBA when applying. The one great thing also with nursing is that it is one of the few careers out there where you have many options at moving laterally as well as vertically. Nursing is rarely dead end unless it is self chosen. Nurses are in constant demand...so the jobs are there. I wish you well and the very best.

Do you think I should continue my MBA classes until I get into a nursing program? I more than likely wont have the MBA finished before I get into nursing but I had thought it would be an advantage ...

The RN programs are hard to get into...LPN seem to be easier...

So you going back to be an RN or you renewing your LPN license

another way to skin the cat is to become a paramedic and test out thru excelsior for an adn. if you're a good student you can do the whole thing in a year and a half. emt, paramedic and nursing prereqs online took less than a year. you can do excelsior in 5 months if you're truly on the ball, while you're working as a medic.

if you're getting an mba, i don't see that having a bsn is any better than having an asn. good luck dude.

i'm starting my mba in january :).

I hope no one minds me saying this, but I think males in nursing is kind of sexy ;).

But that's just me.

Seriously though, I think I'll look REAL sexy once my scrubs are broken in a bit. The new ones just don't have the right fit or something.....ya know?

As for men in nursing.............I work in a steel mill, and there are women working there - what does that make THEM??.....What does THAT make me??

(Answers: 1. Them 2. Me)

Point is - it's all good!!

**Edited to add............That whole "new page" thing couldn't have worked better there!! :rotfl: **

I always encourage men to get into nursing. A former co-worker just told me her 28 yr oldd son wants to go to nursing school. Apparently wife not thrilled with the idea! I told her to keep encouraging him.

You can always tell your friends it is job security, flexible shifts, NO SUITS AND TIES! Seriously, I have enjoyed working with men in my profession. It is the BEST profession with the MOST opportunities!

I have been a nurse 32 years. There were only 2 men in my nursing school class graduating in 1973. Both had been medics in the military and both wanted to go to CRNA school. Since more and more men are becoming nurses over the years, I have seen salaries and benefits and working conditions improve. I think women in general had been more content to sit back and let management run over us. Having more men can do nothing but improve the status for all of us.

My husband is a retired police officer and he says he wishes he had gone to nursing school way back when instead of spending the years he did in law enforcement. I have worked with several traveling nurse husband and wives. That would be the ideal, especially after your kids were grown.

Nursing offers many options to men and women. I am quite greatful for the increase in men in the profession.

I wouldnt worry about it. I am a RN in NC and i havent had no bad reactions from people saying something like but your a guy. In all honesty we have 4 male residents who wont let a female give them a bath so males come in handy. Now pay is like this. The closer to a big city you go the more money you make out here. Good luck
