Males as Nurses

Published

I am thinking about going back to school to get an ADN to become an RN.

I have a 4yr degree and work as well but hate it. The thing is, people think negatively about guys who want to be nurses.

How do you deal with that? Nursing seems to be one of the few careers where you shouldnt have a hard time to find a job but it is so populated by the majority of women that I am wondering as a male will people look down on you?

Specializes in Nursing Assistant/ Army Medic, LVN.

I tell people that I want to be a nurse to "meet chicks".

Most of my hillbilly friends seem to be alright with that.

But really, WHO CARES what people think?? It's YOUR life - live it to make YOU happy!!

**edit** Nursing also PAYS pretty well.

Thanks for your plst..You are gith I need to do what makes me happy..I took a job that I am miserable in now and feel stuck in...

How much do you expect to make starting out?

Are you an RN ?

Well, I know how it is to feel "stuck" in a job - I've been there for over 7 years now....It stinks!!

I'm not an RN, I'm just starting my schooling. I can't wait until I can quit my JOB and start my CAREER!!

One of the schools I am looking into provides an informational packet that includes expectant salaries for Recent Graduates.

They are:

"LPN: $12.00 - 20.00"

"RN: $17.00 - 30.00"

(That's a Tech. school in WI) - your results may vary.

Don't take no trash from nobody, brother!!!......Do what you want, and do it with pride!!

Good Luck!!

Nursing is the one field where I felt that I could immediately positively affect someones life. People are sick. they come to us, we get them better. Plus where else do you get to see so much trauma.

Hey Nurseguy,

Nursing is a good field for men and women. I don't know where you live but I live in the Seattle area and no one boohooed my desire to become a nurse whether it be family, friends, or acquaintances. Things are changing fast and nurses who are male ain't that weird anymore.

Well, I guess I havent really told anyone definite yet about me wanting to be a nurse but i know i may get mixed actions bc im a male.

I am in the south by the way...

SO how much do nurses make where u are?

I have never had anyone say anything or act different around me while nursing. Fact I believe I had advantages. I have had one or two female patients request a female nurse but that was rare, and understandable. I took no offense by it.

Go for what YOU want to do.

Chet

thats sounds good..i hope i get the uplifting environment like you..may i ask..what nursing degree do you have? i am hoping to get into an ADN (RN) program. but if i dont I had thought about getting into an LPN program but I dunno if that would be good or not. I have a BBA and some graduate MBA course work so I hope to one day go into management.

BTW im making a career transisition even though I am young

Thanks

I was a LVN/LPN. I let my lic go, but took the NCLEX last week to redo it. I was a paramedic before that.

Go for the RN, with your degree it would be easy to work into managment.

Chet

Do you think I should continue my MBA classes until I get into a nursing program? I more than likely wont have the MBA finished before I get into nursing but I had thought it would be an advantage ...

The RN programs are hard to get into...LPN seem to be easier...

So you going back to be an RN or you renewing your LPN license

Your MBA would be a major asset. I am redo my LVN, then into the first RN program I can get into.

Off to work

Chet
