Male student here. Where I work there are not that many male nurses or "murses" as my friends calls us. I'm in my last semester of school and can't wait to get out there and be the best damn murse I could be.

42 yr old male LVN student graduating in Dec. married to an RN. I have found some areas dificult to work in because I am male. The biggest obstacle is that I am an LVN student, not that I'm a male. Go figure.

I finished my BSN in May 07 and was the 5th member of my graduating class to pass the NCLEX on July 5. At 44 years young I have now started my second career as a school nurse. I have never let anyone tell me that I am "Just a male nurse" - because I take excellent care of all my female patients as well as my male patients. I do admit that some of the older Nuns in the catholic schools do take a double look and sometimes stare at me - however I think it is more that I resemble a large bear than what they are used to seeing as a school nures taking care of the children. They are getting used to me now as I have been on the job over a month. The kids all love it when I tell them that they can be anything they choose to be when they grow up because it is OK for Ladies to be doctors and Men to be nurses if they want to be and work hard and study. It is nice to be a positive roll model in a world that needs good folks to step up and lead in a positive direction.

Good to see I'm not the only "old fart" starting a new career. :-) I don't think there is a such a thing as a male nurse, only professional nurses, at least that is what I will refer myself as. I was in the semiconductor industry for 20 years (technical, marketing, sales) and I start my BSN program in January 08. I'm looking forward to the next great adventure. Good look on yours.

Wow a lot of replies. I'm liking so far, interesting place and active. But as much people that are here i'm suprised there's not more considering how many nurses/pre-nurses are out there.
Well i just currently switched over to a BSN program, i go to Florida International University, always wanted to work in healthcare, and my last major was just not going to take me where i wanted.

Rock on...glad I found this forum. I was beginning to get a little intimidated. I start BSN program (still deciding which school) at either Baylor (Dallas campus) or Texas Woman's University-Dallas (yeah, they really need to change the name...) this spring. Went to orientation for one and another will be this week. I was one of three guys out of 80 people in the room. I am married with one youngin', but holy smokes, if I wasn't married... I'm glad I've found some others going through this. Anyone on here going to TWU or Baylor??? Help me decide which to go to!!!!????
