dl.... I am once again a nursing student after 13 almost 14 years..... going back for my RN,,,, first of all it has never been a bad thing for me to be a minority in the nursing field (a man) and in larger cities there are quite a few more than in rural areas ( I have lived in both) I am not black but one of the other mobility students in my class and a friend of mine and in Birmingham, Al there are a number of black male nurses. you should check out a website that I will try to find an post it for you that is for all minority nurses and I think you would like it....
I'm looking foward to the website, I just dont see a lot black nurses in Houston, TX, it shouldn't make a difference of your color or gender , but your chraracter, some people unfortunatley dosen't see that way. Here is a good website:

I'm going to school now to obtain my ADN. As you speak of rare number count me. I'am a African American male and 21yrs of age. I have thought alot about how far I'm going to continue my education. Most definite I want to get my BSN and someday even further my education to become a CRNA. Like many males coming into the field of study I feel a lot of negative vibes. But, guys we can all become LPN's or RN's reguardless of our gender. Wish the best of luck to you all!

    31. bachelors in an unrelated degree. career changer. was pleasantly surprised when i showed up to an intro to nursing class (for those considering nursing, not those already in the program) at the local community college to see, out of a class of about 40, that there were about 6 guys, about 10 bachelors degree holders, and a good number of career changers and assorted other "older" students. also talked to a nurse who told me that new hires at her hospital are split up about 50/50 male/female! sure makes me feel a lot more comfortable about being a male nurse!

I'm one of five male nursing students out of 32. The gals are crazy to each other........they back stab each other, but since I am a guy, they kinda leave me out of it............anyone else notice stuff like that?

    Glad to see you guys.

I think it will be slightly to my advantage to be the only guys amongst a bunch of women, but im also slightly scared by it.
ARe you doing any volunteer work now? The ratio is about the same, so it can make you feel more comfortable. I will enter a masters entry program in June and the ratio will be from 8-12%. We will stand out, so I guess there can be some pressure because of it, but no worries. Good luck to you.

I'm glad to see so many guys on this board. I am totally FREAKED out that I will be alone in my nursing classes (we have 250 seats, only 12 are guys) and I don't want to sit by myself everyday because I don't want to talk about hair or nails.

You wont have to talk about nails or hair. Talk about the classwork, you all have that in common. They will be very comfortable with you there, so stay serious about your studieds and you will make many friends. Good luck, it is great to see someone who knows what they want to do at such a young age.

Hi. I'm a minority when it comes to age, sex and race. I'm a 20 year old male LVN. I plan to work on my ADN in the spring. Just think, we are all pioneers here.

I'll be starting my 2nd term in the nursing program tomorrow and look forward to another challenging term ( psych & obstetrics). Congrats mtreyes from another Filipino. I got my BA in Economics eons ago in the Philippines but it was never as tough as nursing school. Fortunately, I'm in a nursing program with a sizeable male population and a lot of really intense women so nails and hairs are not a major conversation topic.

Wolfie, could you provide a link to the Filipino nursing forum?
