Hi All!

I'm a crazy father of 2 ex-premed who just recently turned down Northwestern to go into a RN program.

I already have an Associate in Science, but I'll be getting another ADN and then go to a 4 yr school.

When I went to an info session about the RN program ill be trying to get into, out of like 70 ppl only 5 were guys.

So I want to know are there any men out there?

For joining the regular Army reserve it went from age 35 to 39. But for the Nurse Corp it is age 46ish. But I think since you are prior service they would credit you your time in already.

Its not about the money its about service. I'm paying for my RN school out of pocket and do not intend to have Uncle Sam pick up any of the tab. I have friends outside the wire as we speak and having a yellow ribbon on my car just isnt cutting it for me.

Nothing wrong with that as we all should seriously consider serving in the military. My only point was that sometimes military assignments change, contracts get automatically extended, and your wishes have little impact it.

There was a recent story someone told me that made me rethink any military commitment and that is that many second seats in fighter jets are being filled with MDs. I guess I could see it if they couldn't find enough candidates willing to do that job and there are certainly many MD grads with lots of debt!
right you would be. The military does what it will,and I know people who have been involuntarily extended AFTER their commitment is up. Jobs lined up and then lost due to having to stay longer and get out later, only to look for other work. Stop loss is not a myth. Nor is "plugging in people where they are needed" , e.g. making military/security police augmentees out of computer systems analysts. The military must fill its needs for deployment and wartime commitments. A body is a body.....

So, yes, there is a reason the GI Bill and other education programs exist. It's not all fun and games for anyone. If one is not serious about military service and all it entails, he/she is smart to think twice. You are smart to think about it.

Hello, everyone. My name is Jack and I am a 40 yr. old, husband, and father of three great kids (ages 7, 6, 4). I'm hoping to leave the IT field behind in pursuit of Nursing. I'm currently in the process, or will be shortly, of applying to Nursing schools. That's right, by the end of summer all those prereqs. will be done! I hope that upon becoming an RN that I can join the Reserves (if they'll have me at my age) and that I can, ultimately, navigate my way into a Nurse Anesthesia program.

I am currently enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in the infantry. I know that doens't relate to nursing, but I can offer a little assistance in the matter. With things being the way they are right now, I would advise against the Army. With 3 young children I don't think you really want to go over to Iraq/Afghanastan. Right now the way to go is the Air Force, for nursing. Air Force reserve will pay you up to $25000 as a sign on bonus, and they have the shortest basic training so you would not be away from your family that long. Right now they are not playing any major roles in the war as far as the medical field is concerned. It is being handled primarily by the Army and Navy. Hope this info helps you.

Hello guys,

Our job as male nurses in a female world is great. I love to do my work and I still hope that more guys will come in. I am working at surgery and I am the only guy between 35 girls. Lonely but it is fun.

I'll be starting my CNA program in Oct.

I REALLY wish I could jump right into an Associate degree program, but I can't seem to find one without a 2-3 year waiting list.

Oh well - I guess I'll just have to be a CNA while I wait. :rotfl:

I am a CNA and I have experienced dealing with Post Mortem. By your question, being a student, I don't know if your question concerns the direct care of a PM patient or the spiritual side of life/ then no life? Technically, you will learn by observing a more experienced CNA or Nurse. Spiritually, to me, it is the closest experience to being with God can ever have, because as a Christian, there is something going on at that moment if you know what I mean. I have recently finished a 25 hr volunteer orientation with a hospice organization and WOW... On a human level; call it a spooky experience, a scarey epperience. The loss of life is never easy but it takes experience, you will have your own memeries someday. Donnie

Yes, I too am a male nursing student. I started with one summer class to lessen the load of the fall semester. In that class of 20 or so, 3 of us are guys. I am wondering about the fall semester ratio. I know of at least one more waiting to get in.

In all honesty, I am kinda afraid and excited at the same time. I began school to become a paramedic but the classes were always being cancelled due to lack of enrollment. I think it has worked out in my best ionterest though. The demand for Nurses is a constant and the job outlook looks very promising.

I am brand new here and this is my first post/reply. I do have high hopes for the future. I am 46 years old and have been a factory rat my whole adult life. This is something very new to me but I am very eager to get it started. My first semester begins Aug. 22.
