Male Neonatal Nurse

Published

Hello guys,

Currently I am a third year nursing student. Just finished clinical posting at NICU last month during pediatrics module. What can I say is that I really enjoy working with babies. I want to know whether they are male nurses out there who currently working in neonatal unit. Is it possible for me to start working in NICU?

Thank you :)

I have worked in the NICU now for 14 years, I had to move here when I hurt my back in adult ICU and it took some adjustments. I really like it now and usually do the high risk deliveries and charge nurse rolls but love jump in and hold babies any chance I get. The only person who gives me any flack over my NICU choice is my big brother but he just loves to poke fun at me for anything I do. I am well respected by the nursing staff and MD's I work with. I always encourage new nurses to start some where they don't want to end up working however as your first year or so you will make many mistakes and you will have to live with them. But there is a practice at least where I work for the other staff to never forget your mistakes and if you can leave them behind you by changing after a year or two I think you will be happier working in your position of choice.

I have been a NICU nurse for 21 years and I still love it! I have had awesome experiences and blessings beyond compare. If you too much of a man to cry with a parent or show your tender side I wouldn't recommend it. One of my most proud moments was having a co-worker ask me to take care of her twins. Being a male is a big comfort to first time dads. Anyway follow your dreams and the best of luck to you.

I'm a male, and have been a NICU nurse for just about a year now, love it. Great place for men to work, we have 4 male nurses and 1 male NNP.

I've been a NICU nurse for 8 years, 3 of those as a neonatal NP

Kind of getting interested in NICU as well. Funnily enough, the only friend of mine that got a NICU job out of school was a guy, and the one person who got an internship at a local hospital's NICU was also a guy. Both are parents who love kids. I think it's nice for father's who have kids in the NICU to have a guy to talk to sometimes.

Also something to think about is that as more men get into nursing, more are going to be going into the NICU. Just a numbers thing. Who knows what NICU units will look like 15 years from now.

How is nursing on the basis of being a male. Are you treated any differently? I would like to get your opinion on this matter

Not sure I agree with that statement. We have had only 3 male nurses in 5 yrs. One left last year for adult ICU, one will be starting as a NNP next April which will leave me as the only staff RN on a 300 RN unit. Men do not gravitate towards NICU or L&D. They gravitate towards Trauma, Adult ICU, ER.

I worked on the critical care transport team(hospital to hospital) for over 8 years for a children's hospital. I saw more male nurses in the PICU verses the NICU by a long way. However I am with you. My passion is children's nursing and that is where I would want to be also. I wouldn't be afraid to go for it at all. I "assume" the reason that you don't see many is that most(again assuming) would rather be in areas of intensity like the ER.
