Male midwives, good or bad?

Published

Hello,

I'm new to this forum and I imagine that this topic has been discussed before but I'd like to know what the general consensus among those in the nursing profession regarding male midwives. I will be starting my midwifery training in October and would be interested to see what kinds of reactions that I'm likely to encounter. I doubt that any negative comments will put me off but hopefully I'll be able to have a better understanding and expectation of any difficulties I may come across. I would particularly like to hear from other (female) midwives regarding this issue.

Cheers, Andy.

I think it is fantastic that you are doing that!!! As far as gender, why should that matter??? There are male OB/GYN's, and you would be doing basically the same thing.

Again, I think you are great for doing this.

I think in England, the role of "midwife" is different than that of CMN in the USA.....much more like the RN in ob does here.

And There are LOTS AND LOTS OF THREADS regarding men in OB nursing here. We have a few men here in our OB/GYN/MIDWIFERY area that are excellent OB nurses. I say MORE POWER TO THEM and TO US when they join us. I had wonderful experiences with male nurses when I had my daughter.

My ex-wife attended cnm school in Jackson, MS in the 70's and there was a male student. I don't remember there being any problems. Course I try to forget those days :rotfl:
