Malcolm X Fall 2016 (CCCSON)

U.S.A. Illinois

Hey Everyone,

Long time lurker here!

I made a promise to myself. The only way that I will ever make an Allnurses account, is when I apply to nursing school. Well, that time has finally arrived, and I just finished submitting my application to the City Colleges of Chicago School of Nursing. I clicked on that submit button like a boss!

Good luck to everyone who applied.

Hi, I have not met anyone in the program with a GPA lower than a 3.0, since the program requires a 2.75 gpa

Has anyone who got accepted for the 2016 year tell me how it's going thus far in terms organization, teaching quality? I heard from some students that the program feels like its an accelerated program because its extremely fast paced. Can anyone speak to that? Also, do the classes go through summer? I've been trying to figure that out but have had no luck! As well, i'm applying for fall 2018, does anyone recommend me reading any books or going over my anatomy book again to get a head start? Thank you in advanced!

The teachers are gold. The program is disorganized. Very fast paced, but nursing school will feel fast paced anywhere you go. The Nursing classes for the RN program do not go through the summer, unless you are doing LPN-RN Bridge you must take the summer bridge class. You are applying for fall 2017 or fall 2018?

Overall I'm very satisfied to be getting a great education and be paying 1/4 the price of most nursing programs. Just finished the first year, and the pace picks up quickly before you know it.

Getting a head start is hard, bc idk what books they will require for y'all. If you can find a recent fundamentals of nursing book, that may help you out for first semester and part of second semester.

What do you mean by disorganized? Lol. I'm glad to know the teachers are great at least! I'll be applying for the Fall 2018 RN program! That's cool that i'll at least get a summer off then. But when they say its two years - they mean 2 years without pre-reqs, or with them? I was trying to figure that out. Are you working? I'm super excited to hopefully get in (I have a 3.8 GPA in my pre-reqs) But i'm freaking out about actually getting through it, since i'm leave a well paying job - basically i'm just scared of failure haha but who isn't? But i hear if you fail the ATI test twice - you have to retake a class. Are the ATI tests hard? But i won't be working at all which is nice so i can dedicate all my time to studying.

And i agree with you on that! I am already $50k in debt from my previous bachelors degree so at least with this, i can pay out of pocket!

Another thing i was wondering - should i re-read my anatomy book? I'm wondering, for example if they talk about a heart condition or something - are they going to expect us to remember the physiology of the heart - like the ventricles, etc - or will we just be required to know the symptoms? Because i'm debating if i should review my anatomy book again since i have a while to start. Thank you so much for the info! It makes me feel 100x better! :)

Hi @oregon-88. The program is disorganized meaning administration likes to change things often & at last minute, and it seems there isn't much communication between staff but the teachers (at least the ones I've had so far) are great. Administration also tell you about mandatory” meetings & study sessions very last minute usually the day before or day of, which is frustrating. The RN program is 2 years not including summer unless you still have pre-reqs to take (ie: Microbiology) then most students like to take it in the summer. Most of your pre-reqs should have been completed before starting the 2 year program. ATI exams at the end of each specialty are challenging but are totally passable. At the end of 1st year you take the ATI fundamentals exam but second year you take a lot more! I spoke to 2nd year students and they were stressed because they had to take 3-4 ATI exams in the same week plus their finals. If you fail an ATI exam twice you do have to retake the class which you would have to wait a whole year to retake because they only offer certain classes in certain semesters.

As far as reading your anatomy book all over again it's not necessary. It helps to already have a basic understanding of A&P before classes start because they will not reteach those things in class, however, if you forget something a quick review while you're on that topic will be just fine. Good luck with your application process.

Hello all, I'm starting the nursing program fall 2017. Any recommendations what instructor I should choose for nursing 101?

Both Nancy Kipnis & Susan Neal are great.

Like mcwitty said Ms Kipnis is good at preparing you for fundamentals and Ms Neal is good at preparing you to take the ATI funds.

Thanks.....We have to take another ATI test after getting into the program?

You take ATI test after each semester except the first semester

So many loops you have to jump through with this program.

We take an ATI exam after each subject, 7 total. They are

Fundamentals

Med/surg

Maternal/Child

Pediatrics

Mental Health

Pharmacology

Comprehensive

I'm still confused on how we take a pharmacology exam when there is NO pharm class
