am i making the right choice?

Published

i graduated last dec 09 and got a full time job at a hospital last May. Then i got a full scholarship offer from a uni--but they want me to be a full time student (starting this fall)

Now, i realize how hard the job is. i actually had a 'breakdown' episode at work...it dawned on me that maybe ill just back out from the school and work only...

problem is...my family would be aghast to learn i am turning down a full scholarship to work...the only thing i dont like about the school is that it will take me full time of 2 years to complete the RN-BSN...there are other schools out there you can complete in a year (downside: i wont get a scholarship like this one)...if i study part time, i lose the scholarship and it will take even 3-4 years to get the BSN.

i cant switch to part time at work since i am only new there......

honestly, i am CONFUSED...any input is appreciated. thanks.

Don't feel bullied or guilty about this fantastic opportunity. If your employer wants to keep you, they will work with you.

so should i quit this job or ask to go part time? they will slit my throat....=(

I bet they don't! It's great that you're still in your probationary period - the perfect time to decide this is not the right job for you at this particular time and everybody parts as friends. The healthcare world can be a small place, so don't burn bridges. Write a wonderful letter thanking your employer for the opportunity they've given you, mention one thing in particular that you've learned there that will be helpful to you in your future career. Explain that this wonderful opportunity has just been presented to you to further your education and you will leave your job as of such-and-such date. You appreciate their understanding that this is a chance you just could not turn down, blah blah.

Take one copy of the letter to your direct supervisor and explain the situation to him/her. Send the other copy to HR to be placed in your personnel file. Let them offer to keep you part-time...if they value your work so far and have anything open, they'll offer.

It's a win-win because you get to accept the scholarship offer and the employer knows what's up and doesn't have to spend any more time or money on a new employee who they may not be able to keep on a permanent basis. Never let your fear of a person's reaction keep you from doing what you know is best!

i will have a conference with the directors, educator and preceptor...tomorrow..this conference is an evaluation on my performance...would it also be a proper time to bring it up?

Quit the job!!! You concern for your employer shows a great work ethic, but in the long run, long after you've moved on from this position, you're not going to say to yourself, "I'm so glad I picked a job over a free education".

Your boss is not concerned about your future. You and your family are. TAKE THE SCHOLARSHIP!

Absolutely! It's like a sign from G*d!! Go in tomorrow with your very nice letter in hand and say, "I'm so glad we had this conference scheduled. A wonderful opportunity has been offered to me with a full scholarship to complete my BSN; I'm sure you all can understand why I can't possibly stay at this job, even though you've all been wonderful to work with."

Remember to thank, thank, thank them (leave them with a great impression of you). Offer to stay as long as you can in order to give them time to find a replacement (they probably won't take you up on that since you're so new). Ask if any of them has any feedback on your work and skills that you should hear prior to going back to school (always be willing to get honest opinions). Ask if any of them would be willing to write letters of reference you can take with you (keep a file of these, positive comments from instructors, etc. no matter where you go or what school/job you take in the future).

Done and done!:yeah:

Take the scholarship! I've never heard of anyone who regretted going back to school and furthering their education.

I think you should sit down and talk with your manager. Although you think it's highly unlikely that you could go to part time/PRN status, it never hurts to ask. If they refuse and insist that you stay full time, I say quit and focus on school. There is another nurse out there that would probably be happy to fill your position, so don't feel like you're "letting them down." You can find another part time nursing job, or part time job elsewhere.

Good luck to you! Let us know how it goes!

TAKE THE SCHOLARSHIP. Maybe by the time you need to start school, the facility will let you work part-time or weekends.

Best wishes!

THANK YOU everyone for the support. I chose to go back to school. sitting down with the managers was quite tough. It was the hardest decision I had to make thus far.....I only let one co-worker know about it before leaving.

I had to reread the entries here to reconfirm and feel supported. THANK YOU.
