Macomb Community College - 2020 Nursing Application Cycle

Published

Hello everyone,

I thought I would open a new template for those who are applying for MCC's Nursing program for the 2020 admissions cycle. This should help anyone with questions or concerns regarding the application process or even HESI related tips. Good luck to all applicants this cycle!?

If you want my two cents, here it is. Wayne State may not start classes in May either. If their program is geared toward an in-person class schedule for their nursing classes, then they may put their program on hold. The other thing to consider is yeah, Wayne State is more expensive but their degree is a BSN. If you went to Macomb, you would graduate with a ADN and you will still need to complete the BSN within 5 years of hiring on at any of the local hospitals. They are all working toward magnet status which requires 80% of their nurses to hold a BSN or greater. Beaumont already has magnet status and you have to sign a LOI which requires you to complete your BSN within 4-5 years (not sure which) of your hire date or they will let you go. If you go to Wayne, you don’t have to worry about working in your BSN afterwards while you are working full time. Just a thought.

Sorry for the late response, but I really appreciate your input!! Wayne is doing everything online for the Summer, I'm not sure if things will be online for the fall though. It's just hard for me to justify paying 40k+ for wayne's program vs 6k-8k for macombs program when this area hires ADN nurses. Most hospitals also will pay for nurses to do an RN-BSN program

I'm glad that Macomb has set a date for admission decisions though. Just a side question, does anyone know how nursing classes are set up with Macomb? Are they in 8 week increments? Are we assigned randomly to when we can start the program? Do we get to pick our clinical times/days or are those randomly assigned?

The first 8 weeks everyone will take the same fundamental classes 1145 and 1156 together (by everyone I mean your full cohort of 40). The two labs for the first 8 weeks have 8 student per section, so 5 sections for each of the labs. In regards to the cohort assignments, supposedly it’s random but I suspect we are ranked by grades and HESI score and then top 40 are in the earliest cohort and so on and so forth. I think you can ask to defer to start later if there is a commitment that would keep you from starting during your original cohort assignment but you cannot shift up into an earlier slot. Clinical times and days are assigned to us. We have no choice in it. You can request morning or afternoon clinicals after you have passed the first 8 weeks but no guarantee you will get your request. And yes, I have a hard time paying that much more for a program to get a BSN off the base. But also in this new Coronavirus world that we are living in, I think the hospitals reimbursing for RN to BSN programs for their staff, I think they may be getting reduced. Hospitals are functioning in the red and as you know tons of lay offs. It’s a brave new world out there.

I hope everyone is doing well and staying safe! We are just about one month away from June 15!

I hope I am accepted and get to meet you all!

Hi guys, any advice for non-Macomb students who wants to apply for Macomb nursing program. Thanks, it will be really appreciated!

@Munni Rahman my advice would be to email a selective admissions employee at Macomb to make sure you have all of your prerequisites for the Macomb nursing program. I’m not sure about transfer students, but since current Macomb student’s cutoff for applying to the nursing program was in February, I’m assuming it’s now too late for you to apply to our program for fall 2020. They are currently ranking applicants and acceptance letters are going out mid June.

Has anyone received their letter yet?

Not yet here. As far as I know, the letters will go out on Monday the 15th. The campus is closed through today, although they started working on the letters whilst working from home or so I've gathered. I think they'll go out on Monday. Don't bet on getting them the next day with the way USPS has been wonky since the 'rona started. Maybe Wednesday or Thursday we'll get our acceptance or so-sorry letters.

Letters are coming today! Good luck everyone!! ?

I am in the program—see you all at orientation July 6th online!

This Question is for anyone who’s been through the program. Is it possible to work 2 -12 hour shifts a week while in school?
Thank you in advance
