2011 Macomb Community College HESI and GPA scores for nursing program

Published

I'm trying to get into the Macomb Community College Nursing program. I just took the HESI test and scored a 86.5%. I Also have a 4.0 GPA. What are my chances into getting into the program for 2011, since my HESI is still kind of low?

If anyone can relate please comment. Post scores so we can compare! Thanks for your thoughts:)

I know the start dates are either:August, October, January, or March. I ranked 45, so it looks like I might start in October. Does anyone know if you start in the beginning, middle, or end of October?

You start whenever the second 8 weeks of classes start at MCC. Check Macomb's website for that info.

As for the rankings and start dates....when I started two years ago it was a little different because you could still start without having micro done...but anyway...at our orientation anyone who has a start preference was able to go up to the front and put their preference on the list..doesnt matter your rank. BUT the people who rank the highest will get their choice first. If the person who ranks 45 picks August and there is a spot in August they will get the choice before the person who ranked 46. Does that make sense? I know that my August start date included people who ranked anywhere from 1-50. To answer the question earlier, it wouldn't really cause anyone to get bumped back because if the person who ranked #1 wants to start in October, they just move someone from October who wants to start in August...since there would be an extra spot. It would not be hard for them to find a lot of peole from October who want to start in August. Something to consider about October starts: you finish the entire program EXCEPT the last 8 weeks before summer, so you have to come back after summer to finish one set of classes instead of just being done in May as an August start. This is the reason I choose August.

Thank Laujen...

I totally agree with you on everything you said. I just wanted to put some minds to ease because the rumors that are going around about the program has some people stressed. That is why I came here.

I apologize about last years starting with Micro. I know someone in the program and she didn't have to have A&P or Micro so that must have been right before you started.

I know people in other schools in the nursing programs that are only in there because of their grades and nothing else and frankly I think would not make compassionate nurses. That is such a shame because I think of my grandmother in the hospital getting that person!

Thanks to everyone else who cleared up those rumors about mixing everyone's start date up. :)

At #45 you are only 5 spots out from getting an August start. I'll bet you could get into August if sign up to be bumped up. I think it would be worth a try, dont you?

I visited this forum before the 2011 acceptance letters came out and and I logged off my computer pretty sure I wasn't going to make it in this year, or was going to barely make it. Well I got accepted!

2011-2012 Admissions

Ranking: 110

GPA: 3.6

HESI: 92

Four hundred and something were ranked. I **THINK** she said 460 but I am not 100% sure. I am sure that it is in the 400's though. I or someone else could confirm the exact number on the forums later if it already hasn't been confirmed. Originally I thought I was competing with about 999 other students, and the number turned out to be less than half that.

Competition was weak this year in my opinion, and probably will be next year also. Financial aid is one reason, and the addition of Microbiology and Intro to Nursing for rankings is the other.

Not really excited about not having a life for a few more years, so I am really going to be depending on my peers

Hi MichaelOlen,

First of all, congratulations for making it in, and welcome to the boards!

To answer your question, 423 were ranked. I believe this is about 40 more than last year (someone correct me if I'm wrong..i think there were 383 last year). It seems to me, based on some of the scores that have been posted on this board that were close to the 160 mark, that the grades that you needed to make it in were about the same as last year. Prediction for next year: With an increase in denial letters this year, I'll bet more people will retake courses to get a better GPA, which would raise the scores needed to get in... of course this is my humble brain at work and should not be taken for more than just an opinion

Also, I have notice that a LOT of people seem to think there are 1,000 applicants every year. Maybe there has been that many in the past, but now, I think people are getting this misconception from the application packet; it states that there are a limited number (1,000) seats available to take the HESI; I'm sure the college would take as many applications as people turn in.

I wouldn't worry about "not having a life"... I don't think it will be that bad. I made it through last fall working a full time job, and taking A&P and micro in the same semester, and I managed to take a trip to visit the BF in baltimore for a weekend. Nothing can be more hectic than that! (And here is where I hope that someone currently in the program can brag that they still have time to go out and do fun stuff... I hope........... ) :D

I am graduating from MCC on Thursday and let me put you at ease, you WILL have time for a life. Anyone who says you won't needs to learn some better time management skills. I have friends , I play a sport (and practice 2-3 nights a week), work an Extern job, and have a boyfriend and made it through the program with all A's. I took weekend vacations during school a few times as well. You just learn to bring your notes with you everywhere and study the most important stuff. You will be fine :)

Congrats to you Corazon, for both the grades and upcoming graduation!!

I agree with you, I am in the program and still have a life. I've got a 3 year old daughter and a husband, and we still manage to make it out on the weekends with friends, take trips, and make time for family things. I haven't gotten straight A's, but I'm okay with it. As long as I feel that I know the skills necessary to be a good nurse, and not necessarily how to play word games on tests, Im okay with it.

I have people in my class who still complain about not having a life outside of school. I dont know what theyre doing with their life... either they like to exaggerate/complain for sympathy, or like Corazon said, they have no time management skills. I think some live and breathe nursing, and thats all well and good if youre into that sort of thing, but I think that everyone should have a healthy balance of school and their personal life. Stay on top of your material, dont get behind, and relax, and you'll do just fine!

@ Laugen & @ Corazon, thank you! Thanks for posting those recent two entries showing us how you still have a life beyond the nursing program. I had been concerned that I would lose time for my other passions and responsibilities. But, I also had the feeling that a lot of student nurses just have poor time management skills and/or like to complain to recieve sympathy or to feel self-important. I hope my class mates have good attitudes like you both have. Best wishes from me to you in your careers.

Hello all,

4.0 92 and tied for #21- Wonder how they break a tie with only 40 accepted for each round. Would hate to be tied for 40. Hope I get the August start. From what I have been reading it sounds like ranking is the way they decide your start, lets hope so.

When is the orientation for those that were accepted?

I got a 4.0 and a 91 on my hesi and I was tied for 31. I was wondering too about being tied

and wondering how they decide the 40. I am really pushing for August. I guess Ill wait and see
