I'm trying to get into the Macomb Community College Nursing program. I just took the HESI test and scored a 86.5%. I Also have a 4.0 GPA. What are my chances into getting into the program for 2011, since my HESI is still kind of low?
If anyone can relate please comment. Post scores so we can compare! Thanks for your thoughts:)
The curriculum does run in 8 week sessions. However, once you get to the second 8 weeks, the classes are broke up into 4 weeks each. To make this more clear I will give you a breakdown of your first year....
1st 8 weeks: 1145 - Health Assessment (3 hr class 1x per wk)
1155 - Fundamentals 1 (3 hr class 1x per wk)
1165 - Intro to Nsg Skills 1 (6 hr class 1x per wk)
1175 - Health Assessment Skills (3 hr class 1x per wk)
*all of the above last for 8 weeks
2nd 8 weeks: 1245 - Fundamentals II - Theory A (first 4 weeks) (3 hrs 2x)
1255 - Theory B (second 4 weeks) (3 hrs 2x)
1265 - Clinical (entire 8 weeks - 1 day wk) (9 hrs)
3rd 8 weeks: 1345 - Med Surg - Theory A (first 4 weeks) (3 hrs 2x)
1355 - Theory B (second 4 weeks) (3 hrs 2x)
1365 - Clinical (entire 8 weeks - 2 days wk) (15 hrs)
4th 8 weeks: 1445 - Psychiatric Mental Health - Theory A (first 8 weeks) (3 hrs 2x)
1455 - Theory B (second 8 weeks) (3 hrs 2x)
1465 - Clinical (entire 8 weeks - 2 days wk) (15 hrs)
If all goes as planned - October starts would graduate in October (etc) 2 years later.
I hope this info helps! Good luck and enjoy the ride - I am loving every minute so far!
Alternates should receive letters soon. They just sent out 10. I finally got in!
YES!!!!! :) I got a vet tech letter today (I was an alternate for that program) and I TOTALLY THOUGHT ABOUT YOU! I'm so glad you're in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I'm glad that you don't have to keep your fingers crossed anymore!
I visited this forum before the 2011 acceptance letters came out and and I logged off my computer pretty sure I wasn't going to make it in this year, or was going to barely make it. Well I got accepted!
2011-2012 Admissions
Ranking: 110
GPA: 3.6
HESI: 92
Four hundred and something were ranked. I **THINK** she said 460 but I am not 100% sure. I am sure that it is in the 400's though. I or someone else could confirm the exact number on the forums later if it already hasn't been confirmed. Originally I thought I was competing with about 999 other students, and the number turned out to be less than half that.
Competition was weak this year in my opinion, and probably will be next year also. Financial aid is one reason, and the addition of Microbiology and Intro to Nursing for rankings is the other.
Not really excited about not having a life for a few more years, so I am really going to be depending on my peers
To squash the rumors I keep hearing about people bumping others to further start dates I wanted to ask here in case someone actually knew the answer to this.
I was wondering how it works if lets say 15 people that start in August choose to start in October, however, the people that were slotted to start in October want to stay there. Do the first 15 bump the October people back to January? I'm in the end of the October group and want to stay there but don't want to be bumped to January if I don't have to be. Anyone know how this works? I of course am grateful for anytime but just wanted to start planning my life around my possible start date. :)
Thanks so much in advance!

PS I keep hearing people say the top ranked are the high achievers. I would say that ANYONE that gets into the program are high achievers. :) I also hear it's easier to get in this year than it was last and I beg to differ with that too because THIS year the GPA was ranked on science classes and not just whatever you picked to use towards your grade point. So I think this year's group are hard workers and deserve to be there! As does past groups.
Blynn - I made it in last year, and we werent ranked on whatever we wanted, it was the A&P, Micro, and English, just like you guys.
Some people arent test takers. They may be extremely brilliant, but dont do well on the HESI. Just because someone has a higher ranking doesnt mean they are any smarter than anyone else. I would say it's more important to have common sense and be able to relate to people more so than being able to memorize everything out of a book. Nursing isnt about reciting things out of textbooks and knowing the definition for every med term on the planet, its about helping and caring for people. There is one person in my class who I cant stand because he seems to feel like he belongs there just because he gets decent grades, and yet in clinical, he is the worst. Doesnt relate to patients, doesnt talk to them properly (or nicely), is extremely slow, and seems to not know what hes doing. Its really annoying, and I can see my teacher is very frustrated with him. So, at the end of the day, I would say grades arent everything.
Its rare that people dont want to take the soonest start date, so the chance of 15 people wanting to start later and 15 people not wanting to move up isnt going to happen. There are just some people who either cant get their student loans figured out in time, or may be pregnant/getting married/moving, etc. and cant start early, but Ive never heard of anyone being pushed back, only forward. If youre that concerned about it, call and talk to the woman in the nursing office, she can explain everything to you.

Yep. Thats how it starts, with the first 1-40 being able to decide if they want to start immediately in August, or wait till a later date, at which #41 would be notified that theyre able to start in August instead of October if the August start chooses to start later.
I started in January, and we had 42 in the class instead of 40, and one of my friends started in March, and they had 42 as well, so it may be #'s 1-42 start in August (provided they took their seats in the first place.) Lots of variables, but you are correct.
