LVN Students Starting Summer 2011?

Published

Hi Everyone! I'm starting LVN school June 2011 at Kaplan in Vista, CA. I am hoping to connect with some other LVN/LPN students starting this summer! I started nursing school a few years back, but became very ill and had to postpone it. Now I am finally able to return to school and fulfill my dream in nursing. My mother was a nurse, and worked In-Home Hospice for the majority of her career. I grew up around it, and it is what I see myself doing. I would love feedback from anyone who works hospice as well! Thanks guys! I'm looking forward to a challenging year!

At least they are doing your background check. They wont even do mine until right before the program begins, and I mean like a week before. They wont let us get our TB test done until right before the program starts either (they want it to last the entire year). But my program wants a TB shot, a booster Hep B shot (no idea why), and possibly other boosters if our titers dont show enough. Im thinking I might have to get a couple shots! I dont mind getting them, but still doesnt make me look forward to them lol.

How crazy!... Yeah I'm interested to see if they end up making me have a Varicella vaccine...I had chicken pox when I was two...a raging case! Ahh the joys...I can't lie...I would go kindof crazy having to do everything last minute...I don't start until June 20th and I just want everything done and dealt with!

I plan on getting my titers done soon, just in case I have to have shots and they cant be done together. Then, go back August 1st for my TB test. My Dr. is very understanding, especially since I dont have insurance now (might have to make my fiance buckle down and marry me soon lol). I wish everything was done with, including the program! I feel I should have done something with my life by now (and Im only 23) lol.

Haha! I'm 23 also with a 2 year old! I FEEL YOU. I wonder does your fiance work for a company that will allow him to add you to insurance if you are domestic partners? My boyfriend has my son and I both on his health and dental through the sheriff's dept. It's worth checking into, all we had to sign was a Declaration of Domestic Partnership and give proof of residency and that was it. Electric bill is what we used. We didn't even have to wait for the yearly registration I was just added onto his plan the next month! So maybe that's an option..but maybe you have already looked into it :D On another note...have you already figured your shoe situation? We have to wear all white...no big logos etc. I've read a few different posts but I haven't decided on what's best for me. I wear a size 10 LOL..and have really narrow feet so shoe shopping is not always fun.

Hi im starting the fall LPN program also !!! im so excited and scared but im ready !!! good luck everybody !

I have checked on his insurance lol. It is a no unless we are legally married, which is a bummer. But Im working on him, lol! We have to have all white shoes too. They dont even like a little bit of grey on them. I was looking at the Dansko clog looking things. I at least know I could use them after I got out of school too. Although, we have a JcPenney Outlet close to here, and my grandma buys her nursing shoes there (but she only works two nights a week at a small, rural hospital). I wear a size 9, 9 1/2 sometimes, so I know how you feel. I will go shoe shopping when my fiance makes a good paycheck lol!

Congrats Everyone. I start my PN program this August. I am actually about to go get my second TB test checked now. Orientation is next week. I am excited, but anxious to get all of these medical requirements out of the way. My sister already purchased my school shoes for me, and my boss is giving me one of her stethescopes. So far things are coming together. Good Luck Everyone!

Aww that's a shame about your fiance's insurance! Worth a shot right!? :D So I definitely looked into those Dansko Clogs...but I'm almost positive they don't allow them at my school. I think they have to be a lace up shoe...Oh well. Let me know what you end up picking!

I will let you know! I havent even done an orientation yet. Thats not till August 4th and then the program actually starts on the 8th. I was a little shocked at this because one of their big things they talk about is people having to work full time while still in the program a lot. I would think they would want it done quickly so they could spread the costs out over the summer. Oh well....

Okay, so I had my physical, my TB test, a Tdap immunization, and my blood drawn for titers. Right after that I went and did my drug test. It was not an observed drug test thank God! What they did do is check my pockets, took my belongings into another room checked my hands, made me rinse my hands for 30 seconds, and dyed the toilet water blue. She said to fill the cup and bring it on out! I think I signed a waiver for every move she made, pouring the urine, closing the bag etc. Lol. But, it was a lot less painful than I thought it was going to be. My orientation is on June 17th, and class starts on June 20th! Woo!

They did ALL of that for a basic UA? Wow!!! I have done several drug tests for jobs (accidents, new employment, etc), and have never had any of that done. Just a "Here is a cup, and please leave your stuff in here." Lol. This should be eventful!

Haha yeah they were pretty strict...And the worst part- I didn't know if I could fill the cup or not :lol2: She warned me if I didn't fill to a certain line it was an automatic re-take. It was definitely a little more eventful than drug tests I've taken in the past. I think the most awkward part is putting toilet paper in the toilet and not being able to flush it LOL. But at least it's all said and done at this point. All I'm waiting for are the titer results..and I have to have my TB test read tomorrow. After that...I'm done with all of that excitement! I do think I'm gonna look at shoes tomorrow.
