LVN to RN in California

Published

Hi,

My mom has been working as an LVN in Los Angeles California for at least 10 years mostly private care for para/quadriplegic patients. She was an RN in Philippines but neglected to challenge the board when she came here to become an RN. She now wants to know what courses, units, and other requirements she needs to fulfill in order to take the exam to become an RN. We would appreciate any resources that could provide guidance.

If your mother wishes to become a nongraduate RN, she would need to complete a course of study most commonly known as the 30-unit option. Click on the link below to learn more information about a particular school's 30-unit option:

MJC - LVN 30 Unit Option

If your mother completes the 30-unit option and passes the NCLEX-RN, she will be considered a terminal nongraduate RN (no degree or diploma) and other state boards of nursing will not grant her licensure by endorsement if she ever wanted to relocate outside CA.

Tara,

If you're mom graduated before 2007 in the Philippines. Most likely she will not need to take any course to be able to sit on the nclex. Why not try to apply to CA BRN to determine her eligibility? Check first their website for step by step application process. Best of luck!

Thanks Dcmom. You're correct, my mom did graduate before 2007.

When you say "apply to CA BRN" do you mean this site:Board of Registered Nursing - Applicants. and utilizing this pdf (http://www.rn.ca.gov/pdfs/applicants/exam-app.pdf). I was also thinking of calling them and telling them my mom's situation and get assistance that way but if the sites above are correct, I'll start compiling the requirements for her instead. I appreciate your feedback.

Tara,

Yes! Tara, as you may see the "licensure by examination" indicated theough that site

Sorry my message was cut short. Go ahead and read through it. Gather all the necessary requirements and apply. I would think that your mom would no longer require further education. God Bless!

If your mom graduated before 2004-2005 (borderline years), she may be okay and not be affected by the CA BRN concurrency rules and should be able to get her ATT for the NCLEX-RN.

Irregardless of the graduation year of her BSN, she should still just start the application process, but be aware that the CA BRN most likely will want to review over her transcripts and if that's the case, make sure that her school still has records of them or if she has her own set of original copies.

We've seen others trying to endorse their out of state RN license with a job offer in hand (or in one case, she was already working but required to give the CA license back) but because they could not provide the required transcripts, the license was not granted or the ATT not approved.
