lvn programs

U.S.A. Texas

Hello everyone! I've decided to go to LVN school (and later onto an LVN-RN bridge program).

I was looking into this school, North Texas Professional Institute, and I've met with the admissions officer and it sounds great for my situation (12 month program, and the entrance test is high school level). The only problem is that the tuition is around 15-17k. They do provide financial assistance (grants, loans).

There's also another school of the say type and I'm told it's 5k (I'll have personally look into it). I think it's Cisco. It's in Abilen. That's the problem. One, I've never been there and don't know what it's like (it looks so baren from google satellite) and it's about 3 hours away. I don't know if I can do that everyday with gas prices. I might as well cough up the 15k.

Any LVN/LPNs out there who went to these schools or other schools of the same type? I'm not interested in taking prereq classes for the programs at community colleges (like El Centro). It's too competitive for me and I can't really wait anymore.

Any suggestions? Advice?

Hi there!! I have looked into North Texas Career Institute as well and it is very $$$. My cousin is an LVN and she was telling me about an LVN program in Ft.Worth that starts a class every 3 months, can't remember the name though. I applied to El Centro's LVN program and I will know something the 1st week of July, but if I don't get in, I'll start NTPCI July 31st. I can't afford to travel due to the fact that I still have to work and I don't know of any other LVN programs in Dallas that don't have a waiting list. Let me know if you hear of any other programs.

Could you ask your cousin if the tuition for NTPCI is worth it? Can you actually pay back those loans within the first year of working? Well, I've got some research to do as well.

Also, the school in Abilene I was talking about IS NOT Cisco. It's North Texas Career Institute. It's not really in Abilene, but it's definitely a 3 hour drive for me.

I believe the school in Ft Worth that was mentioned in the Concord Career College in Arlington, but I could be mistaken. There is also Weatherford College in Weatherford but it could be competitive. I hope this helps. I have not attented any of the schools in the Dallas area since I live in Houston but I have family in the DFW area and was thinking about moving back and attending school there.

Ok, I wrote the wrong name for that school in Abiline. It's TEXAS STATE TECHNICAL COLLEGE. I haven't spoken to a representative from there yet but I looked at their website and it says "as of Sept. 2004" tuition is approx: 5.5K. I guess it's much cheaper but it's about 3 hours from me. Not sure. Sounds good though.

I've never been around the Abiline/Clearwater/Breckenridge area. What is it like?

No matter what school you go to, make sure they are accredited and what their pass rates are for the NCLEX. Just something to keep in mind while you are looking for a school. :)

I attended a private LVN school in California at the cost of $20,000. I financed it completely with a Sallie Mae student loan. It was well worth it for me, because I earned $20,000 during my first 4 months of working as an LVN in Texas.

May I ask where you first worked? Was it a hospital or LTC?

I got my first LVN job in February 2006 at a nursing home. I have observed that the nursing homes tend to pay LVNs higher hourly rates than the local area hospitals. I also have a second job at a psychiatric hospital during the week.

Do you mind if I ask you what were some of the tasks that you performed at the nursing home? My cousin said that is about the best place she has worked as an LVN and that is where she has made the most money. I am not totally against working at the nursing home, but I was really excited to work in labor and delivery or the nursery as an LVN, until I heard that LVN's don't get paid as much money at hospitals and that hospitals weren't really hiring LVN's anymore.
