She should insist on further tests NOW. A close friend of mine has breast cancer, she discovered it herself through self-examination (which we should ALL DO!) But please remind her that 9 out of 10 breast lumps are BENIGN.

My sister as a young woman found a lump in her breast - went under anasthesia for surgery and the lump disappeared!!! Surgeon couldn't find it!!! That was years ago and she has had no problems since so it is true 90% are benign but havign said that I know of cases where it was missed and the pateint had Ca. You don't know th full story - he may be taking her off the contracptive pill to see if the lumps go away rather than subject her to a mamogram which has it's own risks for young women.

How old is your friend? I had a lump in my breast after having my daughter and it turned out to be a fibroadenoma. I did not have a mammogram as I am only 24. But they did do an ultrasound and them a biopsy with ultrasound to determine that it was not cancerous.

My sister in law found a lump in her breast when she was about 27 or 28. Doctor told her not to worry about it. By the time the finally worked it up at at 29 she had metastatic breast cancer.

True, most lumps are benign, mine was. But you can never be too safe. Insist she has further testing.

My sister in law is about to leave her 14 year old son an orphan.

Get a mammogram . .there are too many stories like CCL's and what the heck can it hurt to get a mammogram just to check it out?

And finding another doc is a good idea too.

Being totally paranoid on the subject I say go for more tests. Two lumps, well might just be fibrocystic disease, but it might not. Doesn't hurt to check rather be safe than sorry.

She's 26. Does this mean she should ask for the ultasound too, do you think?

I will definitely be getting in touch with her today and advise her to move onwards and get something organized examination-wise.

The thing about mammograms and younger women is that they don't tend to be real accurate because young women have more dense breast tissue. I have heard that sonography is the better choice... who knows? But I agree with the others that this situation needs further investigation.

Sashi...my ob/gyn sent me for an ultrasound the same week...she said that she also felt like it could have been a cyst...when I had the sono they determined that it was solid and not fluid filled and then they did a biopsy the next week. In speaking with the radiologist they said having the ultrasound was more appropriate than the mammogram.
