Hi everyone,

Just wanted to start a thread for Stanford LPCH’s new RN residency for Spring 2020. Application opened Oct 1 and closes Nov 1.

I personally haven’t submitted mine yet, but wondering what units you are applying to. Also, if you don’t mind sharing any info about yourself or what you feel may help your app stand out (i.e. peds preceptorship, went to school in bay area) I’d appreciate it!

@HappyRabbit what unit did you interview for?? I would love to hear more of your experience (I don't think it's against the rules)! ?

I interviewed for Acute Care. They took the four of us in the room. We set down our bags and sat at the table where they had bottled water for us and a little pad of paper and a pencil. They told us to really listen to each other as we answered various behavioral questions. That was difficult to do because they told us we would all get the same questions, just in different orders. So you know you're mind is trying to formulate your own answers and jot down ideas for answers instead of listening to your interview-mates! But we ended up not all getting all the same questions, I think because they might have been running behind. I hope this helps for those of you that get interviews, just to know what to expect. Oh- there were four of them across the table from us, and a person on either end. So, 6 of them, 4 of us. I think of the 800 or so that applied, they took 20, so those are tough odds. I say this not to depress you, but so that if you don't get an interview, don't feel bad. I know a nurse who worked as an NA there for 7 years and they didn't hire her into their program, even though everyone on her unit wanted her.

This is so helpful! Can I ask what you did in preparation to stand out to get an interview? Volunteer, work, nanny, references? Did they seem focused on GPA (I don’t have the best haha) Thank you!

Sure:

My GPA was not 4.0- I'll tell you that! But it was about a 3.5. I did have an F on my transcript because I failed a Critical Care because of a math test. I repeated the class and got an A, so the F wasn't figured into my GPA, but it's still there if you look at it.

I had been working for LPCH as a Patient Companion (sitter) since January. (I think they give everyone who works there an interview) I also have volunteered at Kaiser Peds with my therapy dog for the last 3 years, and volunteered in the Pediatric Palliative Aquatics program at George Mark Children's House for about 2 years. (Children's Hospice.) As you can tell, I was very Peds focused.

I don't think my interview went very well at all, because I was so nervous. It was my first interview as a nurse. I had been preparing SO HARD (I compiled a list of 50 interview questions, wrote out the answers, then tried to memorize them) because I'd been told that I needed to prepare really well. I don't recommend it, because during the interview, instead of being present, I was madly trying to remember which story or example would be best to use for that question. The questions they asked didn't exactly match any of the questions I'd prepared for, so I think I probably appeared rigid and tense.

After not getting selected, I've interviewed for several other positions and even had some offers that I turned down, and one offer I'm still considering. I've found when I don't pre-prepare, and am just relaxed and natural and myself, I've done much better. Because I genuinely enjoy getting to know people, you might even say I enjoy meeting the interviewer! (Although big group interviews still give me shudder.)

Good luck to everyone: just be yourself! Happy Rabbit

Hi guys,

saw this thread and figured I might as well join in. I applied as well but I’m honestly looking into L&D but acute peds was also a fine choice.

I am a senior graduating this dec. I am not in any peds or maternity preceptorship.

I swear the last time I was in this website was when I applied for nursing school and here I am now... looking for a job lol

good of luck everyone and I’ll try to update as much as I can or if I hear any news...good or bad.

Hi guys. I applied! I went to Samuel Merritt's ELMSN program. I got licensed as an RN in feb of this year and graduate with my MSN in a month! I precepted in a high-risk Labor and Delivery floor at John Muir. I was previously a medical assistant and medical scribe before nursing school. I chose acute care peds as my first choice and maternity as my second choice because I heard that they aren't hiring anyone into L&D this round (not sure if that is true but someone who works in the new grad program mentioned that on a new grad FB page). I don't know why it would be an option if they aren't, so could be false info. Good luck to everyone! When are we supposed to hear something?

Congratulations on graduation coming up, so exciting!! ? If you don't mind me asking, which new grad Facebook page are you a part of? Would love to get any and all updates possible! As for us hearing back, they haven't updated the timeline on the website so not too sure. ? Anyone else have info?

Hi, it's Happy Rabbit here. I just want to say I hope I wasn't to discouraging to anyone in sharing my experience. You should know that I am old. I've noticed most of the people who get picked are in their 20s & 30s. And I'm way over that. I am probably the age of most of your moms! Best, HR.

PS- I think they really take their time letting everyone know about everything. That's just HR for most hospitals...

PPS this is the Lucile Packard New Grad March 2020 page on Allnurses. Just scroll to very top of page and you'll see it. Congrats to all you new graduates!!!

The group is called New Grad RN-Bay Area Ca. It's very helpful.

I've heard that notifications for interviews will be mid Dec, and interviews will be in Jan. I've also heard from several sources that units hiring are NICU, Maternity, CVICU, PICU, Heme Onc, but not L&D or medsurg. Also for HappyRabbit, don't lose hope!!! My 45 year old friend made it into the last cohort.

Best of luck to everyone!

I heard from some managers at a hiring fair. BUT, I could have been mistaken.
