LSUHSC CARE Program Information

Published

Hi. I am applying for entry to LSU's CARE program for my Accelerated BSN degree in August 2008. I am just getting ready to send my application off, and was wondering if anyone here has done this program, or is currently enrolled in it.

Mainly, I'm curious about the admissions standards. I have always been a very good student, and maintained above a 3.5 in college. I also have an advanced professional degree in another field. I am hoping these things will make me an attractive candidate for the school. I am curious how competitve the program is, especially for someone who is not a Louisiana resident.

Also, I'm wondering what the program is like. I know that it's got to be pretty intense if it wraps up all the nursing education into 18 months. What is a typical schedule like? How many hours a day and things like that?

I'm really excited about this opportunity, and looking forward to reading any responses here. Also, if anyone is currently applying as well, I'd love to connect with you so we can bite our nails together.

Hey, barhood! Congrats to you guys - I just talked to 3 of your classmates today and it sounds like y'all are getting psyched for graduation.

Anyhow, I'd also like to extend an offer to meet up with anyone. CARE 9 is back on a busy schedule come April 5th, but if you're in the area before then and want to look around or meet and chat, hit me up. I think I have a good grasp on things from an "almost halfway" point. I don't have the bright eyes I did this time last year, but I'm not Debbie Downer either. Haha! I have upsides and downsides to share but who can say that any program is perfect, right? Most of what we've been through so far just can't be expressed in conversation - you have to experience it. That's not a bad thing, you'll understand right after physiology ends in December, I promise :D.

I am a Care X hopeful and would love any insight on the program. Oh and congrats!

Hey barhood32...thanks for the great info..I don't have to keep checking da mail box LOL but do dey send out letters if u make it r not? I would love to meet up with u I'm n new Orleans

Yes, you should get notification either way. I was scheduled for the interview over the phone, though. My interview was in March last year and I got my acceptance at the very end of April via snail mail. Letter dates have varied drastically over the years, so I wouldn't hold that date to heart necessarily.

barhood is a great rep from the graduating class to meet with... If you don't know anyone from the class behind and want to chat, I'd be happy to talk to you also.

Hi, CARE X hopefuls. I am a member of C8 and will be graduating in May. Our class will be part of the interview team, and they told us April 10th will be the interview date.

Thanks for the update. April 10th is a Saturday. They would have interviews on a Saturday? You may not know all these questions but they would have interviews on more than one day right?

barhood and cpkrn I would love to meet up if you guys have time when I fly in for the interview.

All our interviews last year were on consecutive Saturdays. I don't know if they're doing more than one day but with our schedules around here, Satudays actually make sense :).

Hi everybody, I got called for my interview today on April 10. What type of questions were asked? Any information and heads up will be appreciated. I am extremely excited and wish every other Care X hopefuls lots of luck!:D

Wow, congratulations!! I am so excited someone has heard something. Did they give you a choice of days? Was Saturday the only option? Any week day choices?

Oh I really hope I see a New Orleans area code pop up on my phone this week.

HEY CONGRATS ..I ALSO GOT A CALL TODAY FOR an interview on April 10th.. yea I'm soo excited..hope to meet you CARE X HOPEFUL :-)

They only gave me one option. Saturday-4/10. She said interviews would be every half hour from 9:30-2:30. Pretty excited. Super nervous.

So am i ...yup saturday was the only option she gave me also

Interviews are super laid back - much like a friendly job interview. Just be yourself. They ask a whole lot of "Tell me about yourself," kind of things. Also, have a genuine answer about why you want to go into nursing and how you define nursing. I actually gave a really stupid answer to a question, stopped and said, "I'm sorry, that was really dumb!" They just laughed and let me give a different answer. A big one was "How do you feel about not getting A's?" I heard that if you said you couldn't handle not getting A's, you were no longer considered (just a rumor).

Answer truthfully. Don't memorize answers you think they WANT to hear. The interview is to get to know you, not to stress you out and drill you with questions about factual information. Try to stay spontaneous and true to yourself and your natural personality. Figure out what makes you unique and what you could bring to the program. As I said before, the demographics of my class are astounding and it seems they were looking to make a very diverse class.

This was just my interview experience from last year. They could very well change things up and possibly change what they're looking for (I don't know this for a fact, just saying. Things tend to flip-flop around here). I was really nervous, but you really don't have to be scared. I don't think there's a single nasty person in administration and they'll surely do their best to make you feel comfortable and welcomed.
