LSUHSC CARE Program Information

Published

Hi. I am applying for entry to LSU's CARE program for my Accelerated BSN degree in August 2008. I am just getting ready to send my application off, and was wondering if anyone here has done this program, or is currently enrolled in it.

Mainly, I'm curious about the admissions standards. I have always been a very good student, and maintained above a 3.5 in college. I also have an advanced professional degree in another field. I am hoping these things will make me an attractive candidate for the school. I am curious how competitve the program is, especially for someone who is not a Louisiana resident.

Also, I'm wondering what the program is like. I know that it's got to be pretty intense if it wraps up all the nursing education into 18 months. What is a typical schedule like? How many hours a day and things like that?

I'm really excited about this opportunity, and looking forward to reading any responses here. Also, if anyone is currently applying as well, I'd love to connect with you so we can bite our nails together.

I actually could've chosen a date that was a month away but I was available, so I just went for it. I'm sure they'll work with you on dates. I'm in CARE 9 right now and we don't know a thing about what's going on (I've been trying to get info for ChanelCinq). CARE 8 might know something though since they'll probably be in on the process. If I get the chance to chat with my CARE buddy, I'll ask her.

(I've been trying to get info for ChanelCinq).

Thanks cpkrn!

They have had your applications since the beginning of February so it is more than the third day unless you are referencing another program.

Many schools take several months to get back to you and I understand that and I am fine with it.

I was only wondering because last year all the interviews were in March. We are now in March and no one has been called for interview. I live over 2,000 miles away so I need notice so that I can reschedule my clients and get a plane ticket. And starting March 25 for 2 weeks no one is allowed any PTO because of a major system launch. Then we have a lot of people on vacation in April. In April I could probably take 2 days off and fly in one morning and out the next afternoon.

Sorry to vent. I don't care how long it takes them to go through the applications. They could do interviews in May or June for all I care. I just need to know in advance because of my work schedule and booking air fare. All the universities I know schedule interviews months in advance as obviously some people need to make flight arrangements. Not everyone lives just down the street.

ChanelCinq,

I believe things are different this year because there is a grading rubic for gpa, interview, goal statement, etc. instead of selecting candidates by gpa only. I know the goal statement is worth 20%. I'm not sure about the others. They are still reviewing applications as of today, and interview invites will be sent by mail or a phone call. Some of the medical team are volunteering in Haiti - don't know if this has anything to do with the CARE program, though. I suppose we can't go by last year's schedule.

P.S. FYI - Not sure if this was your post about having two prereqs to complete, but all must be finished at the time the application is turned in.

As far as I know they are using the same process this year for selecting candidates as last year. The totals add up to 100%. The goal statement is 20% and the interview is 30%. There is also the GPA and I don't know what percentage is placed on GPA. I don't know what the 4th item is and what percentage.

All this info I received from various sources.

Well they did cash my check on the 5th so I know for sure they received my application. There was a little glitch with the USPS. It was not tracked at all and I paid over 5USD for various tracking and signature options.

Nope Tigerlover I was not the one with pre-reqs. I am completely done with pre-reqs and just waiting for the call with good news of the interview. ;-)

My class was the first to have the new rubric last year. Aside from a few of the application pieces, we never officially knew how things in the application were weighted. We all seem to have a variety of GPAs and incredibly diverse backgrounds - former NFL cheerleader, military, researchers, just graduated with first degree, and some, like me, are pretty plain :). Seems that diversity and personality were big factors in choosing my class. I still have no clue what they saw in me but I won't question their decision. Haha!

I don't think any of our administrators are in Haiti as I've seen most of them around. Not sure how this might affect things, but there is a TON of big deal stuff going on for events surrounding the school's 75th anniversary. Many of these events involve the participation of the administration, so I'm sure that just adds to their already hectic plate.

There were several people last year who were rejected due to pre reqs not being completed, yet they were invited to interview. I think this thread has gone on for several years now :smokin:.

Thanks cpkrn2b2011. Keep us posted if you find out anything as I know you will.

Hope you are enjoying some down time. If I can even call it that.

Hey ChanelCinq,

I called the school on Monday, and they said that they have not started the interview progress yet, so that is a good thing. I'm sure we would get an interview and hopefully receive a letters saying that we've been accepted :). Class of 2012 here we come!!!!!!!

Goal statement? Are you talking about the "goal statement" area on the app? I thought that the essay was supposed to embody that so I just wrote like, a paragraph for mine. Prob totally doomed....

Thanks for the update clssygrl80. That makes me feel a lot better.

No, I was not referring to the section on the application. I was referring to the one page essay (Admission's Statement or statement paper they called it). I think I used the term goal statement as the previous poster had typed goal statement.

I still have no idea how one can create a title that is "creative, sparks interest and is related to nursing, the accelerated program and the school of nursing's mission and vision." I think my paper was really good and the catchy titled addressed a few of those things but no way did my title encompass all 5 of the things they wanted.

Ok, cool. I definitely agree with you about the title, too. Kind of hilarious, really.

Hi, CARE X hopefuls. I am a member of C8 and will be graduating in May. Our class will be part of the interview team, and they told us April 10th will be the interview date. As for being frustrated about not receiving info in a timely manner, it is an unfortunately common occurence. I received an acceptance in May and never heard anything else from the school until a few months later when they sent me a packet of required immunizations and forms that were due in 5 days. But, all things considered, I've enjoyed the time and consider it a great experience. Going to school in New Orleans has been great. I just finished an ER rotation that included time in a level 1 trauma center, so there are many unique learning opportunities. I don't know the specifics of the admission formula, but you guys seem to know the basics: gpa, interview, essay, etc. I believe all components are weighted the same, but don't quote me on it. Feel free to ask any questions, and I'll try to answer them. If anyone lives in the NO area and would like to meet up, thats fine too.

bjaycee---i see you've put out alot of good info. If you read this, i'm always up for a coffee....your old CARE buddy
