LPN's WHO'S GOING FOR RN????

Hi I am a LPN for 9 years now. I haven't started school yet.

Just looking at my options at the moment for getting a RN-ADN.:redbeathe

I have been an LPN for 12 years alot looking into getting my RN. Trying to decide if I should do ASN or BS??? Any suggestions??? Looking into Excelsior. I am just having a difficult time trying to understand the process of Excelsior?? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Mare1036,

EC (Excelsior College) grants the nursing degree. There are publishing companies that could actually provide you with book, study guides, online studies, etc. Some of the those companies are RUE Education, The College Network, and I Study Smart. Go to EC website and they will advise you of the publishing companies that they would consider. However, they really do not endorse any of them, but there are two that they refer. (at last check). I currently use RUE, however, if you are truly dedicated to the cause you could really complete your degree without the publishing companies. EC publishes a study guide for each course, you can also buy your books online, on Ebay, Amazon, Etc. I know that is a lot of info. but if you are really interested let me know, I would actually give you my books. That is what us nurses do. I have been an LPN for 17 years. I have about a year left.

Thank so much for the info. So you have one year left....when did you start? I hear mixed info on the duration of the course. Are you doing ASN or BSN?? So you are going through RUE. I was considering Excelsior. But not sure which is better. Can you tell me why you decided to go with RUE? Are the books you have good for either? Sorry for all the questions:) And thanks soooo much for all the answers:)

You are quite welcome. I am pursuing my ASN, I have been at it for about a year. RUE is only the publishing company, they are no a college, neither is College Network. The publishing companies can only provide you with the study materials. All of your testing is done under Excelsior. I went with RUE because it was straight forward in comparison. I work for the Dept. of VA, and I personally know at least 5 LPN's that went through EC. I would not streer you one way or the other. Do your homework on any and all of the programs to see which program fits your needs. Everyone (including me) will offer an opinion along with their perception. Again, I will answer any questions that I can for you.

That's great you work for the VA. Whereabouts? I have been trying to get into the VA for a few years. My husband is employed for the Federal Govt and has the same benefits/retirement that the VA has, which are awesome! I interviewed for the VA in Ann Arbor earlier this year and then they had a hiring freeze. But then last week I had another call from the VA for. I was so excited. They are supposed to call me back this week to schedule an interview. I know it's difficult to get into the VA. That's great for you! By the way, do they assist you in paying for your RN in any way?

As far as RUE, I have not checked into them so I think I will do that. I want to take the route that is the simplest program to understand. I must admit I have been very confused by all the info out there.

Do you feel you are understanding the info well? I mean without being in a classroom type setting with instructors?

I currently work at the Tampa VA in Polytrauma Transitional Rehab. Tampa VA is the busiest VA in the US. I started at the Dayton, Ohio VA in 1993 after a 4 year hitch in the Marine Corps. I think that the VA is one of the best institutions to work at which comes with a great deal of percs. After you have been in the VA for 1 consecutive year, they will reimburse you for your tuition. There is also a program that will pay your annual salary, and pay up to $30K a year for your education. To top it off, you have 2 years to do it.

I think that RUE has been very heplful for me. I did do some classroom time a few years ago. Of course like with anything else, you must have some dedication to the program. Even though the VA accepts LPN's, I must admit that they are very pro RN. There are so many oppurtunities for the RN as compared to the LPN.

RUE has been very helpful, and yes, I would refer them.

I couldn't agree more about the VA. Ever since I interviewed there earlier this year I just can't stop thinking about the people I saw there. I just can't imagine a job that would give you more gratification then helping all the Veterans. My husband is in the military and my father a Vietnam Vet so it would mean so much to me to have the opportunity to help them. Not to mention the great deal of variety it would offer. I am envious of you:) By the way...thank you for your service!

Hi itsmejuli, may I asked in what college of Tampa Bay area are you attending to that you will finish with your rn in 3 semesters? I am trying to find an institution that will provide me the opportunity to do it as soon as possible. Also an lpn for few years but not acclamated with the location and requirements to be accepted into the bridge program. Can you help me with more information? Thank much

Hey y'all,

I was glad to come across this thread cause I have been wanting to know what views you guys have about the question of whether RN program is easier than the LPN. I have another question and would appreciate if someone could tell me whether RN pre-requisites are harder than LPN ones. What is included in the RN pre-requisites? Is it subjects like microbiology and is there a lot of chemistry done? Please someone tell me. Thank you for your replies.

i have 2 pre reqs...chem and college alge.......i took algebra in highschool but geom,same with bio,took that in HS but not chem....and seeing i already have an AAS degree in teaching all my other pre reqs transfer......
