You said you had fun on your days off, but what was the job like? What type of nursing did you do? How did the staff treat you? Was the housing ok? I'm also looking for info on travel nursing as an LPN. I've never done it & would appreciate any info. Hawaii would be my dream assignment. also, did you hear what the staff LPNs average pay is in Hawaii?

Has anyone out there tried the travel nurse thing as an LPN? I'm thinking about it and would like to hear some other folks experiences first. I realize there are many more travel opps for RN (which I am currently working on thru distance learning). I'm having a hard time making ends meet on my LPN salary and also paying for school. The agency I'm talking to is quoting twice what I make. But I want to know the real scoop from someone who's done it. Anybody?

I have been traveling for the last 2 months. I got a contract with IHS for a year. I had a choice of 3mo., 6 mo., 9 mo., or a year. I chose a year with bonus pay. I am working with Dakota Temp. They have treated me well.

I am thinking about traveling to a place that I can go to school to get my AAS, somewhere the pay is decent and I can maximize my skills as an LPN. Does anyone have suggestions? Also, is there housing benefits, as some companies give to RN travelers?

My travel nursing assignment has changed since I last wrote. I started at IHS in AZ, loved the job, the people were great, but they decided they were going to start doing away with travel nurses and LPNs were the first to go. I am very glad that I had the opportunity to work there, the experience was great. I then went to work at a LTC in KS again the people were really good to me. The work was hard, but the experience again was great. My idea is that I should learn something new at each job. I now am working at a cancer center in Texas. Again all is great. All is great & have had no problem with them teaching me new procedures. The travel companys pay for your housing and utilities. They also pay for your travel and most give you per diem pay to cover your expenses. I have been real fortunate to have worked with some good companies. I have not had any problems keeping busy, but I am signed up with more then one company.

Hi There And Welcome, I Worked As A Travel Lpn After The Army For 3 Years With Trav Med Usa Out Of Charlotte, Nc...then Was A Staff Nurse In The Er In Winston Salem. I Am Getting Ready To Take On A Second Travel Assignment With Good Pay And Full Housing, I Can Even Take My Dog...it Is A Long Waiting Game So Be Able To Do Some Per Diem In Your Area Till You Get What You Want...alot Of Jobs In California For Lpns Right Now...and Alot In Texas Right Now... Good Luck And Keep On Studying..i Still Need To Take Rn Boards..

Travel Nursing For Lpns...have Patience...go Where You Want To Go And Don't Jump At The First Thing Handed To You...remember The Saying "be Careful What You Ask For You Just Might Get It", That Is True...do Some Per Diem While Waiting For That Special Assignment In Alaska, Or Colorado Or The East Coast...i Have Been An Lpn For 20 Years...after The Army For 14 Years...i Did The Lpn Travel Thing For 4 Years Till Assignments Just Ran Out...worked 6 Years As A Staff Lpn And Completed Rn School..still Have To Take Boards...but In The Interim, I Am Traveling And Looking Forward To My New Contract In Arizona...have Faith...you Can Go Where You Want To Go...sooner Or Later...and You Will Be Better For It...best Of Travels..

:typingI am an Lpn and have been traveling for about a year and a half...It is great and it's bad...same as any other job...depending on your expertise will depend on which company...I am a dialysis nurse so I use a company that specializes in that...if you have the company get your apartment make sure you let them know security is priority...just go into the job with an open mind and as they say when in Rome...as soon as the other employees see your willing to work they will help you get along...and never discuss what you make...I've seen some do this and they are treated badly by the other staff...good luck and if i can help would be glad to...leave a post and i'll give you my email...:nuke:

Yes, I am interested in learning about the travel nursing as an LPN as well. How much experience are you required to have before a travel nursing agency will consider you for a position? I have about 3 years experience, but it is not consecutive. I worked for a year right out of school in 1985, had a horrible experience and gave it up. I took a refresher course in 2005 and worked again for about 2 years. Right now I am traveling the country in an RV with my new husband and thought about incorporated travel nursing in our plans. I also am looking into online courses to get my RN. Any and all input to these 2 issues, i.e. travel nursing & online education LPN to RN courses would be appreciated.

Hey lpntoo, thanks so much for your post, that is such a good pointer not to tell anyone about how much you get paid, will keep that in mind. I wanted your advice, I just passed my lpn boards, and I am in the process of looking for a job in the hospital, preferebly med surg, but job openings in this seems very slim for brand new nurses. Should I work in a docs office, then with a little experience eventually slim my way to med surg. What do you think is the best path for me to go, because I want to eventually do travel nursing, and I also wanted to know how much experience do I have to have before I can eventually consider travel nursing.

onfire...you need at least a years experience to travel with a good company that is...with med surg you can travel with almost any company...but if you specialize than look for a company that specializes but most company dabble in most all...i'm a little surprised your having trouble getting on med surg but anything in the hospital setting would work...good luck and best wishes...
