hi everyone,
i'm new to this site...& already love it:heartbeat anyway, i am currently an lpn and want to further my education to rn, bsn. i am currently enrolled in a program in my area, for rn, asn, but honestly i'm not a fan of it:o. it's a brand new program to the school, so no proven track record of graduates. besides that i work fulltime and have 4 children & a husband. i'm highly considering switching to online programs. any advice or recommendations on which online/distance learning program is best or worst? i have been talking to several online colleges like rue (who uses excelsior college ny), and a few others that i cannot remember their names at this moment. any tips or advice is very welcome...especially from nurses who have actually gone through any of these programs...good, bad & ugly i want to hear it all! thanks!!

From what I heard last, Excelsior is the only accredited LPN-ADN distance learning program, but it is not accepted in all states.
There's a LPN-BSN distance learning program by Indiana State University that is accredited in some of the states that don't accept Excelsior.
The College Network and RUE is publishing companies, not schools, that sell there study materials, which is very expensive and will cause you to locked into a contract that's nearly impossible to get out of. If you want there learning modules, Ebay will have them for a fraction of the cost, without the expensive contact.
My only advice is to do extensive research on both Excelsior and Indiana State University to find out if your state will accept the degree and the costs of books and learning materials. So you won't regret it later! It took me a year to start with Excelsior after doing research on the school and making sure it was accredited and accepted in my state, and after reading students comments on the program. This forum have plenty of info on both distance learning schools.
The only "recommended" book I bought for Excelsior was the Fundamentals book I got from Half Priced books for $6.00 in very good condition! I got the rest of the study materials from Ebay and www.studygroup101.com
I finished all of my requirements, including the Clinical Exam for Excelsior and have no regrets! I'm set to graduate December 18th and with alot of hard work and motivation, finished the program in less than a year while working a full-time and part-time job.

Good luck to you!

DO NOT go through RUE Education!!!! The material you purchase DOES NOT go along with the tests! I failed some of the tests because the material they gave me did not go along with the test. I gave them $10,000! Trust me, they will lie to you to get money!!! AND, you are under a contract and cannot get out, you have to pay once you sign the papers.:angryfire
Wow thanks for the info! I don't want to blow money on useless crap! THANK YOUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!

Seriously, I did EC, and am a fan. But if you are already in an ASN program why not continue? You have one term left, no? Bite the bullet and finish. It'll be better in the long run - you will be able to endorse your license to any state, with no problems. And the LPN/BSN route is long and on-line education is very denabdubg.

Do not do yourself a disservice by quitting the program that you are in now. That is the easiest route to your goal, with the better prospects for your future. Save Excelsior College ASN program for plan B should a catastrophe hit before your graduate. And stay away from Rue, Chancellors, The College Network, or any other publishing company. They are only eager to get you to sign an inflated contract.
Well, there are several reasons why I'm considering dropping the ASN course I'm in now....one of them being that the cost is $50,000!! The program is brand new, they haven't had any graduates yet so they are still on probation with the BON and if their students don't do well on the NCLEX they could be shut down before I even finish:eek: I'm also having a lot of trouble balancing school hours, work & family. I have to work, unfortunately I am the "bread winner" in the family, my husband works hard but I almost double his pay, and we are incredibly short staffed at work and they are giving me a hard time about not being able to pick up hours.
I wish I had one term left!! I have 2 years left! They don't have an LPN to RN transition program at this school, and would only accept 24 credits from my previous college! I was told that all costs were included in the price they qouted me, which is $50,000!! But I have been discovering that everything is NOT included...like the $250 they expect me to spend on white scrubs...it doesn't even have the school logo embrodered on it!! I told them I could get white scrubs from walmart for $12.99 a piece...they got mad!
Well, since you are in the beginning of this iffy program and have little invested, I could see quitting it as long as you are accepted in the alternative program in your area. Too many if's for $50,000.
$50k? Nope.
In wht state do you work? EC is an option depending.

I'm licensed as an LPN in Indiana....but live right on the border of IN and MI so I could go either way, but live in Indiana
They both accept Excelsior, but check with your BON to be absolutely certain. And check into Distance Learning and ask residents of those states what's up.
