LPN relocation

Published

I am working with Hurricane Katrina victoms. One of the people is a registered LPN in LA. She is trying to change her liscense to TX so she can apply for work. She has found there is a $200 application fee. Is anyone aware of how, where, or who we should contact to see if this application could be waived due to the circumstances.

The Texas licensing body would be the one to talk to. Work on the angle of "there go us by the grace of god". If they are unwilling to waive the fees, see if they can pro rate it, or even take payments out earning?

I would use any and every tactic possible. The biggest problem I can think of is her original licensing office even open, standing, existing to verify her records?

Good Luck.

Since I am not familiar with the nursing liscense how do we contact the Texas licensing body ? Who would I plea my case to? Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

Read some of the posts in the Hurrican Katrina forum, as long as the nurse has a legal license to practice in the US, then their US license is good right now in the disaster states, for working on disaster relief. At this point, I think that most of the fees are being waived for nurses from LA.

It would be the Texas Board of Nurisng, you can just put that into Google or Yahoo and will get all of the information that you need. I suggest that you just phone them, that will be the easiest.

taken from the tx board of nursing website:

displaced licensed louisiana nurses due to hurricane katrina.

for licensed nurses from the state of louisiana who are temporarily displaced and residing in texas due to hurricane katrina who would like to obtain a temporary and/or permanent license in texas, you must do the following:

  • if you have never held a texas license in the past, you must file a temporary license/endorsement application paper form. at the top of the application please write "hurricane katrina displaced".

you will be instructed to attach a $200 fee, 2" x 2" passport type photo and two fingerprint cards to the application. we are making the following exceptions:

  • if you are unable to pay the $200 endorsement fee at this time, you may attach a letter to the application stating that you are unable to pay the fee and agree to pay the fee prior to receiving your permanent license.

  • you do not have to attach the photo nor the fingerprint cards. upon receipt of your application, we will send you a form and two fingerprint cards. please complete the form and attach the photo and fingerprint cards and return to our office as soon as possible.

  • eventually you will need to request verification from all nursing jurisdictions where you hold or have held a nursing license. we know that the louisiana boards of nursing are not able to respond at this time but you will still need the verification. if the louisiana boards of nursing are not up within the 120 day time frame of your temporary license, we will make a one-time extension.

once the board of nurse examiners receives the application, we will mail a temporary license good for up to 120 days.

  • if the fee issue stated in a above is not a problem, you can go to our website indicated above and file the application online, pay the fee and receive a temporary license within ten working days. the link for the online application can be found on the left side of our home page. this will cut several days from the processing time and hopefully allow you to obtain work quicker.

note: once we issue a temporary license, you and/or your employer can verify a temporary license online and you are permitted to begin work at that time. the board does not require that you possess the paper form to begin work.

  • if you have held a texas license in the past, you will need to reactivate your previous texas license. please contact our staff at (512)305-6809 for this procedure.

You can also contact the Texas Workforce commision, or the Texas Workforce center...they are hellping katrina displaced individuals on a STATE GRANT get license's transfered and also into the workforce.

the phone number is 254-200-2000 (that's here in central texas, but they can lead you the right way!)

good luck!

I hate to start a fight here but these people have lost everything. $2000.00 can only last so long. These people need love, support and compassion. Not judgement.

Agreed. I was pretty disgusted by that post...

Scarry to think that this person is going to be taking care of people.
