LPN programs

Published

I was just curious how many of you are getting your LPN-I am seven months out from graduation. I am in a one year comprehensive program. We spend four days a week in class, nine hours a day. Tuesday we start med-surg clinicals. I have a lot of experience in nursing already so I am really excited but I sure wish I was getting paid. Unfortunately, my program does not get college credit for ANY classes we take, and lucky for me I guess I have most of my pre-reqs. I am 28 and did two years of college work for my BSN then went to work bc I wasn't taking school seriously. I plan on finding an accelerated program to my ADN then take my BSN classes on line. Seems like such a long road and seven months seems forever away.

Just curious as I am rather new to a lot of this....why would someone go for their LPN or LVN rather than go straight to an RN?

I am accepted for a Fall '06 RN program where I currently live, but may have to move to CA and will have to start over on wait lists or whatever is going on there before getting in to a program.

I probably sound rather dense, but now I'm wondering if I should consider an LPN or LVN program first if necessary?!?!

Thanks for any insights!!

I completed an LVN program in October 2005 and plan to complete an LVN-to-RN bridge program in the near future.

1. I had none of the RN prerequisite classes completed.

2. The LVN program was 1 year long. I cannot afford to be out of work longer than 1 year (mortgage, other bills), so a 2 year RN program would have caused me to live in poverty.

3. Since I had no prereqs completed, a 2 year RN program would have taken 3 years to complete. I figure 1 year for prereqs and 2 years for an ADN program.

4. I worked 12 hours daily at my previous job and earned $40,000 yearly, so I could not keep this job while going to school. The schedule of 12 hour rotating shifts was brutal.

5. In Southern California, the waiting lists for RN programs were very long. The private LVN programs have virtually no waiting lists.

I definitely would have went straight into an RN program if it was feasible for my lifestyle; however, it just was not to be. I had no prerequisite classes completed, a mortgage and other bills to pay, and other issues that prevented me from devoting the time to completing an RN program. The LVN was much more feasible, since it was 1 year long without any prerequisites other than a high school diploma. I do plan to bridge to an LVN-to-RN program in the near future, though.

For me it was the convenience of being able to do my education online and I attend campus only to test out on my skills and then I do clinicals on the weekends. I work full-time and needed my income to make a living. When I am done with this program, I take the NCLEX and if I pass I can then work as an LPN. Plus the school I want to attend for my RN requires you to be an LPN before you are accepted into the program.

Which -- or who's -- program did you do online if I might ask?

I go through Northland Community and Technical College in Minnesota. Here is the link http://distance.minnesota.edu/

You do have to attend the campus for skills and you have two choices in Minnesota for clinicals. The clinicals in Bemidji Minnesota are a week at a time and the clinicals in East Grand Forks Minnesota take place across the river in Grand Forks North Dakota and you attend approximately 5 three day weekends. Hope this helps:)

I am in an 11 month 1260 hour course for LPN. We are in our Medicine rotation right now. I love it so much. Our graduation is scheduled for July 28th. Yippee! Take care, Tracy

my husband is in the military and we'll be moving in december, so going for lvn right now made a lot more sense.

plus i don't have any of the "regular" classes for an adn degree. i plan on taking those while working, one at a time, and then doing an lvn-rn program.
