Hello to all,
I am currently a HCC student who has applied to the Nursing program and have been denied. I am thinking about getting my LPN license and possibly a transition program after that. When I started college I did not do so well my first couple of semesters (young and stupid). Unfortunately, I was taking science classes at the time. This has not helped my "pre-rec" gpa.
Does anyone have any advise as to where the best LPN program is in Tampa, FL? or If getting my LPN license is even a good idea?
All help is greatly appreciated! :)
Erwin nurses are known everywhere they go. If you have the opportunity go there. Its tough and the instructors are strict but if you are there to learn and not to socialize you will do fine. I am currently an LPN student there and I really enjoy the class. The only down side is that we don't get very good clinical sites. But if your goal is to get your LPN and transition at HCC, Erwin is the only way to go. Also, you can check into PHCC, more credits from your LPN course transfer over.
But I have to warn you be prepared to study. If you have to work make sure it's part time and not too late at night!
ag1986,
could u please elaborate on the clinical sites u go to. I'm trying to get into the March 2011 class at Erwin and I cant find anyone who will give all the juicy details about the program. I have a few other questions for anyone who wants to answer as well.
1. Do you get a choice of what time u go to clinicals and also location choice?
2.any idea of class size?
3. what is the process after the TEAS and informational meeting?
anything u guys wanna give up would be helpful!!
Also if anyone has a recent copy of the TEAS study guide that i could take off ur hands that would help as well!

i cant say for sure what the clinical sites will be, they change. i know the VA is a pretty consistent site and its a good one, but the others definitely dont measure up to that. especially in geriatric clinicals. i find that the it's not really fair to the students who get picked for the "crappier" clinical sites because they don't get the experience the other students do. you dont get a choice of anything in this program. you basically have to build your life around the program. it seems like a downfall but the program is so fast pased you HAVE to. you cant be going out all night and partying, you literally need to study EVERY DAY. but in my opinion that will just make you into a better nurse. clinicals usually start around 6:45-7 AM. first round of clinicals is like 2 weeks straight. the next round you only have to go 1 or 2 days a week and from what i understand (havent gotten this far into the program yet) the rest of your clinicals will be like 3 days a week and youll be in the class those other days. class sizes are pretty big. mine started at like 68, but people drop out and fail out frequently. like i said you must be willing to give this your all. we are down to below 60 now and it has only been 3 months. i dont have a study guide i just took the test, but they do have a learning center at the school that will work with you on your problem areas.. i suggest you call or go in and talk to bari labarbara. she will give you all the information you need.
be prepared to study study study if you go here, dont waste your time and money! good luck.
I'm currently in the Erwin evening program. I have 18 days left to graduate!
All I can tell you is its been a wonderful, brutal experience. You have to study,
you don't have much of a life and you take what you get for clinincals. In the
evening program, when you get to where we are you are in clinicals 4 nights a week.
I'm not gonna lie, its grueling, physically, especially if you have to work full time.
But it is all worth it and totally do-able if you are willing to put in the effort.
And I will say this, everywhere we go for clincials the staff is happy to have
"Erwin students" there is definitely a difference with some of the other programs
and I think our reputation far surpasses the rest. Good luck in whatever you decide!:)
Congrats on graduating! I am waiting to take the TEAS test. I am signed up to take it in August. I hope I can make a good grade and get in. I was kind of hestitant to go the LPN route b/c it will take another year but ya gotta do what ya gotta do! I want to be a nurse by all means possible. Do you have any advice for the TEAS test? I am nervous!
Hello All,
I have just completed and passed the TEAS test for Erwin 2 weeks ago and I am awaiting the orientation meeting scheduled in November. The LPN program I am gong for starts March '11. Its so refreshing to see all of the positive comments about Erwin. I have learned it is tough but it should be when dealing with someone's health and well being. I posted another thread somewhere else about this but if there is anyone out there who is looking for a protege' or is starting when I start, please contact me. I am excited about this venture and have learned over the years that power is in numbers. Let's connect!
Thank ya thank ya LOL...uh, ya know my story is different because I had not had any prior knowledge of the nursing field or the details on what it would take to get in. After speaking with the LPN counselor, I knew that there were 4 sections and the overall % to pass was 70. So if you struggle in on e area and are efficient in another, you will do fine. When I walked in, people were reading books, manuals, notes, and all...I felt I was not prepared LOL but I knew that when given a multiple choice exam, take your time and NEVER second guess yourself. I know you will pass. Eat a healthy breakfast, get rest, and go in with confidence...see you on the other side!!!
Good to know that its not as difficult as i think it is. I'm signed up to take it on Aug 10th. gonna get the study guide and start preparing in about 2 weeks. I also would like to be in the March '11 class so i will see all who pass the TEAS at the informational in november! Good luck to all!Anyone know how soon you can find out how you did on the TEAS? I'm getting so anxious i almost want to take it at another school this month just to get it over with. Maybe we'll be studying together in the near future.

I don't really know anything about Brewster, but you don't take the Teas to get into Galen, they have their own test called the PAX.. Just thought I would mention it... as an option. Good luck!! :)
