LPN pay??

I didn't mean to make it sound like I had finished school, I actually haven't started the program yet but Im planning on attending Southwest skills center for the LPN program. It is the same length as gateway. I wanted to do that and then continue with my RN pre-req's. Because there is such a long waiting list for the R.N programs I thought this would be a better way for me so I could atleast wok for awhile before doing the R.N program.

How long was/is your wait for LPN school? Do you know how long the wait was for Gateway's Lpn? I'm undecided on which way to go LPN or RN. Def want RN eventually but want to get out there and work ASAP!

When do you start? And where is Southwest skills center?

Banner is offering for new grad LPN's between $15-$16/hr. A little low compared to long term care nursing but worth working there for the experience in Med/Surg which you will need for a well rounded nursing base. Also, LTC will work you harder (28-34 patients who you have to pass meds/do TX/assessment/charting/calling drs on lab,etc.) ALOT of work for only a couple dollar more. Hope this helps.

Thanks! I figured it would be somewhere in that $$$ range. I can live with that for now! I wanted to work for banner and then see if they would pay for my RN program. I hear alot of the hosp. are doing that.

Southwest skills in out in Avondale. You have to pass the "Tabe" test and once you do they will put you in the next available class. I am hoping to get into the Aug. class but there is one in April as well. I believe Gateway is about the same in terms of the time frame. I wanted to go straight for the RN but since the LPN is a part of the RN program I figured Id get that done first and then during the wait to get into the RN program I could work......

However, I'm starting block 3 in January and there is no way humanly possible I could keep my grades up, work (the minimum number of hours required by hospitals) and have some sanity.

Check into how many hours/shifts they would require you to work to get your tuition paid for. I know that Hacienda will do tuition reimbursement and they hire LPNs. I don't remember, however, how many shifts they require. Hacienda is a LTC facility but specializes in kids. The VA also hires LPNs and does tuition reimbursement.

You didn't burst MY bubble! I have thought about that long and hard. I also have 3 kids and know that work and school may NOT be an option for me. But, I can see if the place I work for will atleast cover the rest of my pre-req tuition and than while Im sitting on the wait list for the RN I can still work. But, like I said it may just be impossible to work while Im actually IN the RN program. It will all work out the way it's supposed to, that much I do know........

one other thing to consider about working as an LPN while still in school......One of our instructors last semester told us about this little scenario.....She had a Block 3 student who had their LPN. While doing clinicals during the semester, the student made an error. The instructor was obligated to report her to the board because although the student was in school, she was held accountable as an LPN even during her clinical times.......I was thinking about sitting for my LPN until I heard that.....I think I'll stick with externing because there is still a level of "protection" in that role.....

If you are referring to the LPN program, they do not require pre-req's where I am going to attend. As far as the RN programs, no you cannot get into a community college RN program or a state college one without them. However, There are vocational schools that offer RN programs without pre-req's and then they include them as part of the program. These schools are quite costly and I did consider it but have since changed my mind.
