CPNE workshop Tina/PA
YES!! I live in AZ am signed up for the March workshop. I have been procrastinating taking the CPNE d/t taking another Workshop last year in TX and it was CRAP!!! I wanted to take Tina's last year but was unable to get into her class d/t she wanted workshop attendees to memorize her mneumonics and I had not done this in time to take the workshop. So I made the decision to take this OTHER workshop in TX with my tax money and have regretted it ever since. WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY AND TIME!! TINA and SEBASTIAN are the BEST. They will be greatly missed. They have hands down been the leaders in their 5 day CPNE workshop as evidenced by their students pass rate. I will not miss this Workshop opportunity, come hell or high water. Memorize your mneumonics and this workshop will help us PASS the CPNE. Success to you as you prepare for this awesome last chance opportunity. See you there!

Do not use college network
Thanks for the Moral Support everyone who didn't sign up with TCN and decided to give a swift kick to those of us who did! I was one of those who did sign on with TCN and later lived to regret it. And YES, TinkerBell1963 is out $7500. like she said, that is what I owe. The BBB is getting involved cause TCN represents themselves as affiliated with EC,Read their Website. I personally did used TCN modules and stayed in the program LPN-RN with EC, Not cause I'm naive, but I personally refuse to go back to brick and mortar school. Nursing school was a true nightmare for everyone in my class. All of the instructors but one were reprimanded by my State BON, consequently they were fired. I could not go through that again, in my case, Nurses ate their young. Let's remember that these boards serve as motivation and in my case a source of encouragement to keep reaching for my goal, to get my RN now and continue on to my BSN, MSN. Honesty doesn't help when your hurting. Blessings to all and TinkerBell1963, I encourage you to keep reaching for your goals!

CPNE Help from TCN
i am trying to find out if anyone who signed up with tcn was given or offered any help with passing the cpne? when the slimy saleswoman who signed me up (while i was still under the impression that tcn was affiliated with excelsior) she promised me some help with the cpne. i was under a fog just trying to pass my ec nsg courses that i didn't really clearly file away what she had said somewhere secure(it was not in writing so she could have promised me anything and not be held to it). but now that i am studying for the cpne i can't get a straight answer from college network, the saleswoman is long gone.... anyone been offered help from tcn for the cpne, let me know. thanks:nurse:

What things do your family members do that drive the nurse in you nuts?
Neither I or my family is greek, but they do believe that Vicks Vaporub can cure everything from earaches to headaches. I fear for the little kids in my family cause when I was little if I so much as sneezed around my aunts they would slather vicks all over my chest and under the nose. That stuff is helpful be stinky enough to keep away the best of friends. They would shove qtips with vicks into my ear trying to cure an earache, then have to run to the ED when my eardrum would burst. :imbar When I had an Asthma attack(the first of many left untreated, my grandmother would give me a spoonful of Cod Liver Oil/Honey (YUCK)and make me swallow, But I'd puke most of it. I recall wheezing for hours and feeling so dizzy and exhausted. (She almost killed me God Love Her). The strangest one is when a newbaby is born and the baby has colic. They dip a quarter in lard, place the lard laden quarter on the babies abdomen and sprinkle baking soda on the coin and wrap a cloth around the babys tummy and insist this concoction will relieve the colic. Of course the baby would toot/poop or burb since you massaged the tummy,Nor the concoction on the babies tummy. You would fart too if someone massaged your stomache. Stimulating peristalisis. But they refuse to believe that the lard, quarter and baking soda are useless to make a baby toot. ARGH! I just try and give them some good teaching and look the other way since these traditions have been around so long, but apparently no babies were hurt in the making of these blunders, Gotta Luv Em!

wrong injection for the patient
I had a pt who had a pegtube was on BC pills d/t ms and family wanting to control her periods. I crushed her pill and placed it in a small glass with water. As I let it dissolve into the water I realized I was thirsty, pour myself a glass of water, got distracted by a question from my CNA, grabbed the glass of water drank it then, Yup, realized I downed the water with the BC pill. :brnfrt:While in nursing school my instructor repeatedly told us it was not a matter of "if" we made a med error, but when:rolleyes:. You owned up to the error (which some unscrupulous people never do) and that is admirable. Your nursing record and reputation up until this point precedes you. You will move one and have learned a valuable lesson and this unfortunate experience will make you a better nurse. Happy Holidays Avelinne

EC CPNE Prep
Hello, There are many EC students who work in nursing homes, clinics etc who are not in a hospital setting that pass CPNE. I have heard not having hospital experience is an advantage because you have less bad habits to unlearn so you can re-learn the EC way. With or without hospital experience ultimately you must do the CPNE specifically as EC requires or you will fail. So download the CPNE content booklet from EC website, attend a workshop (or 2 if you can afford it), buy the skills bag, flashcards and follow EC instructions on how to pass the CPNE to the letter, reach out to peers and ask questions. ALL your experience can only serve to help you pass. Thats what I am doing. Good Luck!:wink2:

Study buddies for NC3 in Phoenix in EC RN program
I am still looking for a Study buddy in Phoenix. EC has a Study Buddy site but I see that most of the study buddys are from the East Coast. I and my friend, were both LPN's, study at different coffee shops in the West Valley. We both are working on different EC-exams :typing(me NC7, her NC5) but studying away from home help us focus. We would love more students to join us. Drop me an email if interested. :nurse:Eveline, LPN-Soon to be RN in 2009:yeah:

Things nursing school FAILED to tell us
These are my gems: That people(Administrators/NS Managers,etc...) can lie with a straight face and their noses won't get bigger. That a little jiggle of the boobs at a confused male patient can get them to stop swinging. That Holidays are NOT Really important unless your management, at which point you are entitled to the whole week off between Xmas and New Years and your not to be disturbed on major holidays. That the definition of nurse is maid, servant, and slave in every language. That there is an evil spirit of IV pumps whose sole purpose is to drive you nuts and make you curse the day you became a nurse. That thoughts of vacations and time off plans will become a form of relaxation. That anything that does not get stuck in the trachea is edible to a psych patient. That family members who have not visited Aunt Agnes for YEARS will suddenly have opinions on her care when she is on Hospice. That nurses run the other way when the Student Nurses arrive on the floor with their Instructor(was a nursing student/now a nurse and can't help but join others :)). That little kids/old people and all gastro pts can all projectile vomit like the Exorcist(watch for the green gills):trout: That when a nurse tells you in report that patient B is not that bad, they LIED! That putting water into a cup on your cart then pouring water into another cup for the crushed BC pill going into the peg tube of your patient then accidently drinking from the cup with the crushed BC pill in it will not kill you.(true story) And Finally, That if you don't have enough chocolate candy to share with everyone, then don't bring it to class(work). :balloons:

Maricopa Question
Hello, I have only driven to Maricopa to pick-up family from the Amtrack station. No offense but it pretty much looks like a one horse town. Lots of new housing in the middle of nowhere, about 25?mins from downtown Phoenix. I'm not sure which is the closest hospital, maybe Chandler Medical or Maricopa Medical Center. Hope this helps!

Back on Track
Unfortunately I did the same thing as you. I signed on with TCN in 5-06 and enrolled in Excelsior 9-06. It took me until 1-07 to take my first exam NC1 (5 months to take one exam????whats up with that??). I did pass thankfully but my motivation had not been very strong (fear of the unknown perhaps). I have since taken 2 other exams and passed those but I get bummed out with myself. I KNOW that I can do better since I know of other Excelsior students who enrolled around the same time as I did and they are almost ready to take the CPNE. So I recently made a "contract" with myself and gave myself a deadline of 1 EC exam a month until I am done. This is dooable!! My motivation is my husband. He needs to get out of cross country driving to be home more, if I was an RN we could afford for him to take a paycut to drive locally. HUGE incentive since I am tired of him being gone and me sleeping alone. Find your motivation, get some supportive people behind you and I know you can do it!!! Excelsior is a great opportunity to go far in your nursing practice but we Have to do the work first. Good luck to you!!

Anybody have the book by ACN on camp nursing?
I took this book to camp with me and found all the things that my camp was not complying with as far as ACN guidelines. I did not bother to read this book until I was sitting 1100 miles from home with a hostile camp director demanding that I work under horrible conditions. Big mistake! This book is full of tricks and tips that made my experience more bearable. Written by an experienced camp RN for nurses, very helpful.

Christmas Songs For The Psychiatrically Challenged
Dear Nurses, I am sitting here laughing my %^& off, practically peeing my pants. This is funny to me because I personally have 2 of these disorders. This list is hysterical. I work in behaviors units as well as with the LTC folks and feel that I am very compassionate. I am not laughing at them, I am laughing with them. Nursing is a HARD tough job, empathetic humor is HEALTHY.
