What is the Med-Surg course all about?

We had Jr Med-Surg and Sr Med-Surg. This is where my program broke down each system. Jr Med-Surg- we had a systems test that covered all disorders(etiology, S/S, dx tests, medical management/nursing interventions) of that system, a pharmacology test that covered the drugs that treated those disorders, and a nutrition test was given with certain systems.

Sr M/S (3rd sem) incorporated the nutrition with the systems test. The pharmacology tests included dosage calculation problems.

Oh ok. Thank u so much for that information. I think the way your prog broke it down is better than the way my school does it. I'm in my last 2 weeks of pharmacology now and we have med surg next semester; no jr or sr.

Med-Surg is as the last poster stated...it is an in depth view of various diseases and disorders that affect each system of the body, fluid and elyctrolyte imbalance, Hx of nursing, laws and ethics, cancer, end of life care, etc. It is a really tough class, so be ready to study and read a bunch. There is so much to learn, but basically builds on what you learned in fundamentals.

In addition to NF, M/S is the basis for nursing. There is an incredible amount of information that you will cover and have to understand.

The school I attended went system by system. In order to really "get it", it helps to have a handle on anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology. Although my program did not include the latter, a classmate was taking a pathophys class (RN prereq) concurrently. We would study the text for that class when we got stumped or needed greater explanation.
