LPN to RN - Can't afford it!

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

I would really really like to go back to school for my RN but I just can't afford it. My husband and I make too much money for me to get a pell grant. I could do tuition reimbursement at my job but I don't know if I would really want to stay there after I graduate. I don't want to do student loans, I am in enough debt already. With such a nursing shortage, why doesn't the government offer something to help LPN's go back to school? Any advice appreciated. :typing

Specializes in My first yr. as a LVN!.

I think you should go for it... as a single mom, having a mortgage by myself and debt of school loans, credit cards, etc... Im determined to keep upscaling my career ... Im sure there is something you and your husband can work out ... do you have kids? Family nearby? I know I would def. benefit having a second income around here and me just getting thru this LVN program is KILLING me ... but it is what I truely want.. and I know this seems far fetched but its really true ... pursue your dreams ... no matyter how big they seem you can def. do it. Just sit together and come up w a solid plan ... I know the LVN-RN route usually is only 8 mths long... maybe you and your husband take turns.. first he goes then you go ... ? I know my plan is to finish this LVN... work for a year and also do flu clinics on the side next yr in 08' then in 09' I will have paid off all my debt to be able to get into the RN... also do you have other odd end jobs you can fall back on? Maybe pick up a co workers shift, some OT here or there... trust me, Im no standford graduate, not even a married woman! and I have no family just my daughter and i .. my whole school life Ive constantly had to juggle... its getting through the obstacles.. and trust me it CAN be done .. hang in there!

They will let you break it up into payment? That sounds great! I will check into Excelsior some more. I have looked at them before but it seemed very expensive from what I saw. But the way the previous post broke it down I guess its really not. Thanks guys for all the help!

Specializes in burn ICU, SICU, ER, Trauma Rapid Response.

If any of you live in Wisconsin you can do LPN to RN at Southwest Wisconsin Technical College in two 9 month semesters for around $3200. NLN accredited, no waiting list and able to practice in any state. You can do all courses on-line except clinical and skills lab.
