LPN looking to reenter the work force after 6 years

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

Hello,

I am an lpn looking to reenter the work place. I was an lpn for 10 years with no marks on my liscense when I decided to take a break to care for some family reasons. Now my life is in a place where I want to begin nursing again. However, even though my liscense is current as well as my CEU, no one will hire me because I have been out of the feild so long. My question to you is. What do I need to do to get my foot back in the door? Help please. Thanks for any advice you can offer.

LTC will hire you on in a heart beat.

Where are you located? Due to the sluggish economic situation, the nursing employment market in many cities and states has changed drastically for the worse during the past 6 years that you have been out of the field. Some experienced nurses have been jobless for 2+ years as they try to get a foot into the door of this challenging job market.

I would complete a nursing refresher course as soon as possible. In addition, ensure that your BLS and ACLS certifications are current. Furthermore, if you have not done so already, consider the areas of nursing that many other people have deemed less desirable: home health, hospice, long term care, rehab, etc. Good luck to you!

Hey Commuter: Just curious as to why some people deem hospice as undesirable?

For the same reason that some people consider home health, private duty, clinic nursing, and long term care undesirable: it is not acute care hospital nursing. Some people mistakenly feel that you are not a real nurse if you are not working at a hospital.

Danderson, I would check into some local long term care facilities also. You may have been "out" for a while but you do have 10 years of experience which is still invaluable. I reentered after about the same amount of time about 2 years ago and found it very easy to go back to nursing. Surprisingly easy.

Just have a little bit of faith :) I believe you will do just fine!
