Hello I am going to start nursing school( going for LPN) this year and I am wanting sooooooo bad to work in the L&D floor in a hospital but I was told that LPN's do not go into the room and help deliver the baby, only if they have a c section,,,
is this true... My cousin just grad her RN vclasses and I know what she went through and I dont think I can handle that nor I dont think I am that smart,,,,
Thanks
We have one LPN and she has been there forever. Great nurse. But only RN's are hired into the unit now is my understanding unless they already have experience. Our LPN's do the couplet care, not the labor and delivery. But they usually do assist with the babies immediately after delivery.

Most hospitals do not use LPN's in L&D.
I started out in our unit as an LPN. I worked on the postpartum/mother-baby/ nursery area for 25 yrs. I was trained in doing OBT work when our unit became LDRP and stayed in that capacity until I decided to become an RN. We now have only 1 LPN in our area, who really does only tech work. She also has been there forever. Until recently, our supervisor didn't want LPNs because she felt they really weren't needed, but she has changed her mind and is trying to hire LPNs into the area as both OBTs as well as doing LPN work. In my opinion an LPN can really help when it comes to mother/baby care as well as scrubbing as a tech. Believe me, it really helped me when I went on to school to advance my career.

We have several LPN's doing postpartum and nursery in my hospital. You'll find something, just keep looking and good luck.
