Hello I am going to start nursing school( going for LPN) this year and I am wanting sooooooo bad to work in the L&D floor in a hospital but I was told that LPN's do not go into the room and help deliver the baby, only if they have a c section,,,
is this true... My cousin just grad her RN vclasses and I know what she went through and I dont think I can handle that nor I dont think I am that smart,,,,
Thanks

It depends on the hospital and the Scope of Practice for your state. I am also starting my LPN program in August. L&D or ER is where I want to be. ER to start out because you learn a little of everything and never know what to expect. I think it would be a good experience. L&D, OB/GYN is where I want to be long term.

We do have several LPNs on out unit. They are all working on their RN. Currently not hiring anymore LPNs. Don't count yourself short on not being smart enough to be an RN. In most acute setting LPNs are called upon to use the same critical thinking skills... and this is key to being able to work in any specialty area.

Right now our hospital has only one LPN. The rest are RN's. I'm not sure why this one gal got hired because I was told that there were no LPN's in L&D.

I can tell you my experience----I only lasted two weeks-they didnt' like LPN's where I worked.....they all thought I was a clin 3 (until they looked at my badge) they they would be like"oh" and not talk to me again. I kid you not!
Then the OR people don't like the L&D folks-(they come up for day C/S's)
it was HORRIBLE-and that doesn't include the fact that I had to work nights-the night shift folks were supposed to be "nice" anyway good luck to you!

Hi. When I had my daughter there was an LPN in the delivery room with me. She cleaned my daughter up and checked her vitals after she was born and she also helped me with getting my daughter to start breastfeeding. She was a wonderful nurse and really spent alot of time with me and helping me to get my daughter to nurse.

my hospital doesn't use LPNs in L&D at all, in fact it doesn't hire LPNs onto any floors at all anymore (but still still employ a few who have been there for a long time on a few floors). If you do a search you should be able to find some threads on LPNs in L&D, as the topic has come up before and IIRC there were some interesting things to read in some of the old threads. Good luck to you!

No LPN's in any of the OB units I have worked. Some do work in Postpartum/Mother-Baby but even this is becoming increasingly rare.

No LPNs in our L and D, just in postpartum.

We have two LPNs on our LDRP unit. One has been there a very long time and she only does postpartum. She also is a scrub nurse so we use her for c/s's also. Another one was one of our tech's and she went to school to get her LPN and now is in school for her RN. That's the only way she could stay as an LPN was if she was in school for RN.
Thanks for your reply
