LPN exam (NCLEX-PN)

Published

I currently enrolled in an LPN course with a private school in Illinois. When I finish school I would like reside in Florida.

Does anyone know if you can finish school in Illinois, take the LPN exam in Florida and be licensed to work in Florida?

This is very possible. You have two options, and it doesn't matter where you physically take the test.

Your first option is to become initially licensed as an LPN in Illinois and then apply for licensure by endorsement in Florida. Your second option is to apply directly for initial licensure as an LPN with the Florida Board of Nursing without ever having become licensed in Illinois, but in order for this to work, your nursing program must meet Florida's standards for initial LPN licensure.

When you finish school you can apply for licensure in any state that you want to be licensed in. It requires sending your school transcripts to the board with your application to test.

I understand that you must work as an LPN in Illinois for 2 years before you can apply for endorsement in Florida. Is that correct? I would like to move asap.

If that is the case, it would be because you are trying to endorse an IL license to FL. If you apply for a FL license initially, it won't be the case. If you intend to move to FL now, I would save myself the hassle and apply for a FL license to begin with. If you have any questions, contact the FL board. I suppose it might be necessary to provide a FL address on your application.

Will I have to take the test here in Illinois and in Florida?

No. You cannot. You take the test once only. Choose. Take it in IL for an IL license which you will then have to endorse to FL (hassle). Or take it in IL for a FL application for a FL license (save time, aggravation, and money). If you don't intend to work or stay in IL, it makes no sense to get an IL license.
