Hi guys! I am taking the entrance exam for the LPN program at ES BOCES in 11 days. I have been studying a lot but I'm still really nervous about the math section. Can anyone give me some examples of what types of questions will be on the test? I am mostly worried about the word problems. I'm really wondering about the difficulty level. Thanks for the help!!!

Are there questions like this...

(Word Problems)

How many five digit numbers can be formed using the digits 0, 2, 3, 4, and 5 when repitition is allowed such that the number formed is divisible by 2 or 5 both?

A. 100

B. 150

C. 3125

D. 1500

E. 125

How many heptagons can be drawn by joining the vertices of a polygon with 10 sides?

A. 562

B. 120

C. 105

D. 400

E. 282

Just wondering because these are from a practice teas test and they are a bit out of my league. :-/

Aww thanks, you both are very sweet

*HeatherMax-I know your test is coming up in a few days, I wish you the best of luck =)

Hey "loveoverpride",

I'm sorry to hear about your test, keep your head up and maybe what you got finish is good enough to pass! Quick question how was the math portion like? Was it super hard/intense? Or was it really like what people say, just basic math. My test is next week (April 18th) i'm getting more nervous each day. I went over the TEAS test study booklet and it was pretty much a breeze, nothing extremely hard. Hoping that it is enough.

Thanks =) I actually just got a letter in the mail today, saying that I passed I def didn't do nearly as well as I hoped) and that I have an Interview in May. I'm still hoping & praying that I can get into the day program w/ my scores, because I can't do the night program. The math part like you said was mostly just basic math. I would say that if the TEAS test study booklet came easy to you, then you should be good.

I would just keep studying (even if its just a little each night). I also purchased the book with 5 different TEAS test in it (Its by Kaplan). It made it easier and I liked how it mostly explained the questions for each section for you, it gave me a better understanding of the test. My best advice is to get a good night sleep the night before (unfortunately I did not, I was too nervous! lol) Eat a good breakfast (again, I was too nervous) and just remember to breathe and pace yourself. I'm sure you will do great and good luck =)

Glad you still passed! Never give up hope! Yeah i'm studying everyday whenever I have free time now. I'll definitely get a good nights rest a few days before the test. How were the other portion of the test? Like the english/grammar/lit? I just received a rejection letter from one of the community college yesterday night so it was kind of a bummer.

Oh, do they mark you off for answering the question wrong? Say if you run out of time is it just best to guess on whatever you have left? Also was there any converting problems for math? Like ounces to pounds, inches to meters to yards?

ALWAYS take a guess on whatever questions you have left whenever time is running out. I would say also make sure you have enough time to guess at the remaining questions! Give yourself at least a minute or 2 before at the very least. (I didn't for some of my remaining questions in math,so they were left completely unanswered =(

The advice from the review book, put it this way: "If time is close to running out, always guess, it is always better to guess then to leave it blank-since there are 4 possible choices per question you already have a 1:4 shot of guessing the right one, which is always better then having a 0% chance."

I believe there was one question relating to converting measurements (at least the test that I had, everyone has a different test i.e:the person sitting next to you will never have your exact test, or the same questions) The good thing was that they kind of "give" it to you. For example. A pound is = to 2.2 Kilograms. How many kilograms are in 8 pounds? (that was a question from one of my test review booklets). Another one was: how many milliliters are in 4 litters? Another example from my test booklet that helped was. What instrument would be the best method for a nurse to administer liquid medication? (a measuring cup, a measuring spoon, a yard stick, or a scale.)

The reading/english part of the test wasn't so bad. It's alot of reading passages and answering questions (it reminded me of the high school state tests we had to take actually, lol.) It was pretty "basic" as far as that goes. Actually I was surprised one of the articles was actually a pretty interesting read (usually there very mundane and boring, which makes it even harder to get through.)

Also in the review book I had one of these types of questions which was a BIG help - Under which page in the glossary would you look to find information on Bats?

A-Alligators,amphibians pg:28. B-Baboons,Bats, pg:39 C-Canary,Canine pg:51 D:Eagles, Elephants pg:76.

Although that one is easy, it helped make me aware to look out for these types of questions. They will have different constructions if the question, but it follows similar guidelines. Just make sure you READ carefully & pay attention to exactly what they are asking.

Comprehension it's hard to explain because it can be a very "objective" type of thing? "You think its potato, I think its pootatoe." Just try to eliminate at least 1 or 2 answers right away. They will always throw one in there, that makes no sense. Honestly just go with your gut on this & try not to second guess yourself too much.

I'm sorry about your letter from community college =( Just remember "everything happens for a reason" and "when one door closes another one opens" As cheesy as it sounds, it really can be true. Maybe it means that you were meant to go to this school & in the end this school will give you a better education for yourself personally then the community college would have =)

Wow, everything does seem pretty straight forward. I always think when people say its really basic/simple I think they are understating it, but from your examples it is really simple.

I'm rusty on converting, took my chem a few years ago and that was all about converting. But I'll definitely brush up on it again.

Yeah the rejection letter was kind of a bummer, but it's okay it was quite far anyways.

Plus this school I'm taking the test for is a lot cheaper and closer :)

I'll definitely post back my results in a week or two.

Oh thanks for the excellent write-up, the most comprehensive write-up I've seen about the entrance exam. I hope you know that you don't only help me, but the people in the future who was stuck in the position I'm currently in now.If you don't mind maybe I can contact you via email since I can't PM. If I have anymore questions about the test?

Taking a study break and checking in, so happy you passed! I am watching some videos on evaporation and vaporization, I am most worried about the science. Tomorrow will be here way too soon, 2pm is my test. Did they give you a break down of your score? Or tell you what the minimum for the program is? I am just trying to see what the "norm" is.

Aww thanks =) Well I took mine at Eastern Suffolk Boces (luckily we don't have to take the science portion of the test there) For the math portion the cutoff is 60% and I'm pretty sure for Reading it's 55%, although I feel like I heard that they increased it to 60% as well (but I could be wrong.) I originally thought that it was, reading, math, and english, & they just omit the science BUT it's actually only reading and math. However the Reading does have a little of the traditional English component to it (although it's more subliminal) I know for western suffolk boces the cutoff is 50% for math and 50% for english, however I don't know the science cut off (I remember hearing that the science is the least important for wsb but pleaseeeee don't quote me on this!!

I'm sure you will do great & I hope that if you are taking your test at eastern suffolk boces that you are able to read this before so you know not to stress yourself out too much about science. Make sure you get some rest! Also, have something substantial too eat(even if your too nervous, just shove it down! lol) and most of all Good Luck and breathe, breathe, breathe!!

p.s On the letter they gave me the breakdown of the score, but it was sent to my parents house. My mom called me & read it & well she was shouting the "Congratulations you have successfully passed the TEAS test criteria for our admission department, you have been granted an interview" part. Not to mention drilling it in my head that I needed to make sure I get my high school transcripts & apply for a new social security card(my purse got stolen about a yr ago & that and an ipod were the 2 things taken..although I got the ipod back, I still haven't gotten around to the new ss card) and most importantly if I knew where my high school diploma was or did she need to go digging through the attic for me.

lol Mothers!! She did say that I didn't do as bad on the math part as I thought she kept saying "75, I see like 2 or 3 75's next to math "That's good for you Victoria do you remember back in 9th grade?" (I went to summer school 1 time, & the woman still won't let me live it down lol)

She said she was surprised by the English portion(that was always my best subject) because I didn't do as well. I got a 91% reading comprehension but only a 63% on paragraph comprehension & a 75% on sentence structure. Which kinda confuses me, what the heck does that mean "Ahhh, she can comprehend a few paragraphs exceptionally well (maybe even read a whole book!!) however if it's just 1 paragraph she's as dumb as a rock?" lol so I'm def planning on picking it up first thing in the am & seeing it for myself.

Yea I was rusty when it came to converting as well so I had to do a decent brush up (even though the "answer" was in the question I wanted to make sure) Oh! I wanted to mention khan academy! They were a lifesaver for my first 2 weeks of studying. Google it & sign up (you won't be sorry!) They show a bunch of video's basically "explaining" it to you and giving you a full on lesson on all math topics! I started with fractions & worked my way up.

I wanted to kinda "re-teach" myself things I wasn't the greatest in during school but I needed a progressive starting point. I even did lessons that I was good at in school (like algebra) just to get that gradual training process& condition myself (I did this for the first 2 weeks and then I did the review book studying & the practice test for the last 2 weeks)

I thought of it as if I was a person entering a triathlon. Sure I have ran before & sure I have went swimming before (I'm even good at it) and of course I've done an intense workout a time or two in my life. So I knew the "concepts" of it but it's all about conditioning yourself! Getting your body used to doing these things in succession (in this case "learning" and 'applying"). I mean it's so easy to get a scientific calculator and just be able to add 2/3 + 4/8 and get an immediate result. However, what would happen if you have to work it out with only a paper & a pencil ? Even if a person handed you a regular calculator you would still need to be able to work out the formula on paper.

The funny thing is, I started to actually wanted to know how to do these things (it had been so long since I was required to figure math out without the use of a scientific calculator, it was kinda scary) My only regret is that I didn't have that "thirst" for knowledge (especially math) in my high school yrs. I was the queen of "I just wanna pass this & do good so I can be done with it". I doubled up on math my junior year so I can have a "relaxing" senior yr & in my mind "never" have to deal with math again (too bad the 27yr old me can't talk to the 17yr old me, I would really set her straight) Hindsight really is 20/20.

See, another positive thing that came out of receiving that letter was: the less gas and miles you have to use now! Always a good thing!! Cheaper tuition is a double bonus (ugh, the stupid loan I'm currently paying back for medical assistant school still makes me cringe, def another lesson learned!)

Sure you can e-mail me its my user name & it's @ hotmail.com =) Just add a subject in the heading so I don't accidentally send it to spam! lol

I was told for the LPN program I am trying to get into they require a 70% on the science. :nailbiting:

Congratulations! Don't sweat the interview, it's quick and painless (well at least mine was). Wear something nice and don't have your hair in your face. Make sure you have all of your paper work with you, they will check it off one by one. They ask you a few real life ethical questions and then they will tell you if you qualified for day time or night time. If your scores are high enough, they will offer you day time first if you want it. Then they'll send you down to financial aid.

So, How was it???
