LPN at Boces in New York State- post school prospects

Published

Hello allnurses!

I have been lurking on this site for quite some time, since I decided last year to make a career change to nursing.

I am currently accepted (for the fall) into a nursing program which is too expensive for me and am thinking about switching to a BOCES LPN program which will be half the cost. Then doing a LPN to RN/BSN bridge program afterwords.

1. I am wondering if anyone has graduated, or knows graduates from BOCES with an LPN and found employment afterwords.

2. Did you/ they do an LPN to RN later on?

3. Has anyone worked as an LPN in other states with a BOCES certificate from NY state?

Thank you!

I received my LPN education from a BOCES program and graduated in 99. I was able to take NCLEX 2 months after graduation, and had a job 2 months after that. I also reciprocated my license from NY to Indiana. I have not worked in awhile though and am going back to school now. I'm just going to start from scratch with an ADN program.

I know several people who are working as LPN's that went to BOCES. Where in NY are you? I'm in Glens Falls, what RN program did you get accepted into? What about financial aid to help pay for school, is that an option for you? I know that they are no longer taking LPN's at the hospital but I always see positions at nursing homes, health centers, and doctors offices. Also, all of the RN programs that I've looked at accept LPN's as second year nursing students. One school that I applied to allowed you to take the PN-NCLEX after your 1st year and work as an LPN while finishing your RN. I also know a few people who were working as LPN's and haven't been able to get into an RN program. Look into all options to help pay for school, I start at Samaritan in August and will be living off of loans and grants...congrats on getting into a program, that's a huge accomplishment in itself around here :)

Specializes in Peds, Med-Surg, Disaster Nsg, Parish Nsg.

Thanks so much for replying!

Breffe- may I ask, did you have to wait 2 months after finishing the program or is it possible to take it right after? Or... does this all have to do with when they offer the exam? (yeh, sorry I am new to this)

bela- Thanks for the congrats! I got into Trocaire college. Unfortunately I do not qualify for many loans or grants because I have a previous bachelors degree. That is good to know about skipping the first year of RN if you have an LPN, thank you for that. I just called the board of nursing the other day, they mentioned that you can't get an LPN halfway through nursing school anymore, they used to offer it but it is unavailable... maybe that depends on the school though.

Thanks again!

Hi. I graduated from Trocaires Medical Assistant program (A.A.S.) in Dec 2010. I felt that the program was not good. I did well but I didnt get much hands on experience! The director of that program was also the LPN director which I was told by a few people there LPN program is disorganized too! I hear that now they finally have a new medical assistant director but I dont know how much better it is. Of course when Im done. I have been working part time at a hospital and havent found full time yet..so I was thinking of doing BOCES LPN also. I do know someone who graduated a few years ago and started as a medical assistant until she got her liscence just 3 days after graduation! It was a doctors office and she said the pay started higher than most places. She recently took a position within ecmc I believe. I also used up alot of aid so Im not sure how I can make the schedule work with my job and if I can pay for it.

Cmm- Thanks for the info!

Its nice to hear all the good comments about BOCES and that your friend was able to get their licence so quickly after the program.

Good luck to you in your LPN search!

Your welcome. My main thing is trying to get everything worked out somehow. So are you going to Trocaire or BOCES?

Well, I don't know for sure yet, I too am trying to sort things out! Also, I dont know if I have been accepted into BOCES or not. They are supposed to notify me sometime this week.

Oh...So you just recently took the exam? Were you trying to go for days or 4-10? My aunt who went to ecc for rn she musta failed something but think finished most of the program is talking about doing BOCES 4pm-10pm.

Ok, So BOCES has a good passing rate. But do they accept transfer credits from other school. And second how tuff is the program since the passing rate is so high will so many graduates. I am wait listed till september for Monroe and would want to see if i should try BOCES? Any suggestions guys?
