I am graduating in May 2013 as an RN (A.S. degree). What I need is review of my resume and any suggestions. I "think" I have it ok now (have done many changes, rewording, etc..), but I know with all the wonderful nurses on here, I can get some advice on what more to do to it to put my resume at the top of the pile . Also- what are your thoughts on adding subscriptions to journals/nursing resources in a resume??
Thank you soo much in advance!

Oh, also- what are your thoughts on portfolios? I'm seeing and hearing more and more that employers are looking for these? If so, any ideas, suggestions or examples of yours?
Thanks a bunch!!

First of all, I'm not a nurse but a programmer so I have a portfolio and think they're a good idea to have in any profession. Mine is divided up into tabbed sections: Resume, Personal Characteristics (birth certificate, police criminal and driver summaries, notes about you the person, etc.), Experence ( letter of references, personal notes about your work, etc.), Accomplishments ( copies of your diploma, award letters, transcripts, certificates, etc.), Skills ( further subdivided into tabbed subtitles showing your skillset with samples of your work: reports, orders, writeups, etc.). Pages are in page-protecters and in a ring-binder executive portfolio.
In your profession you need to take the precaution to redact personal info that not yours and get the necessary permissions to make a copy of the skill sample you want to keep.
The idea is use your portfolio as a prop while you're having your interview. You answer a question about your skills or personal qualities and you say "let me show you an example" and open the portfolio to show the example. Walking into an interview room with one of these things is rare among candidates and the interviewer actually becomes fascinated because they never seen one being used as "show and tell". Hey, in this economy you use anything as an edge.
Also, portfolios are a great way to collect and store your life experiences in a single place. I've had mind for over twenty years.

I have a decent portfolio but nobody asked to see it so far. Maybe big teaching hospitals care more about it.
