low GPA- pursing second degree BSN-HELP!

Published

Hi all,

I could really use some advice from those who encountered a similar situation:

My undergrad was a 2.5 cumulative GPA-not competitive at all in zoology.

I discovered my passion for nursing later when I volunteered as a HIV intervention specialist at a Free medical clinic. Since then, I have taken A&P I & II, Micro, organic chem I, general psych, abnormal psych, statistics, pathophysiology, honors bio I, and now I am currently taking BIO 2, college physics I, and Organic chemistry II. I currently have a 4.0gpa in all of these courses from a community college. All I need left for a majority of schools is nutrition and developmental psych, which I plan on taking this summer.

I have made considerable improvement, but I still believe that my undergrad gpa is preventing me from my passion. It isn't competitive enough for for most accelerated BSN programs. Can anyone offer me some advice about what to do?? Please?

Or what programs I should highly consider applying to due to the way they view applicant profiles?? I will go anywhere.

Thanks!!

I had the same situation: I had a 2.79 from my first bachelors degree and I had a 4.0 in my prereq's. All of the nursing programs in my area only looked at your prereq GPA, they did not include your prior grades from your other degree. Even with my less-than-stellar prior GPA it was highly regarded that I had a previous bachelors degree. I hope that helps you.

This was encouraging thanks. What schools in your area would you recommend I look at ??

Specializes in NICU.

Talk to the director of the ABSN schools that you want to apply to and see what are the criteria they look at. How many years ago did you complete your first degree. That may also play a factor in their decision. They may not penalize you for lack of academic excellence in your youth since you have a 4.0 in pre-reqs.

You could do like a lot of us did and get your associate's degree in nursing from a community college. I didn't have the most stellar GPA either when I was a teen just messing around in college, but I applied to CC nursing program and was accepted. After I got the degree, I passed the NCLEX, went to work in ICU for a few years, then went the RN to BSN route. Worked out just fine in the end.
